Modular vehicle Weapons.
Vehicles have modular vehicle mounting capability. For example BT's can trade different weapon components.

FMGs
FA
Lighter MG
Flamethrower and so on.

However, each change a vehicle loses it's abilities or gains abilities
FMG's LT's (No LT shell capability)
Light MG (Armored Car type) (Faster movement)
FA (Heavier vehicle minimum firing range equal to that of an FA can no longer be used as a tank and becomes mobile artillery)
Flamethrower (reduces fuel capacity due to larger tank dedicated to flamer fuel)

the devs mentioned something like that in a dev stream i think early last year. The concept art was there being an AT half track variant as an example. I like your idea more

As an extension to this idea. Wrenches would be used to interchange the different firing platforms. This system could also allow for further sub-system modularity not just applicable to tanks only but to many different vehicles.

The depending on the firing platform you'd have to basically disassemble a tank partially to do the retrofitting. Then carry each modular piece probably consisting of the mounting kit and weapon in question. To make it simpler just make the mounting kit universal but the modular component not.

It would also be an unlockable tech-tree function.
