Beginners tips
Bought this game over a year ago but put little time into it.
Any tips in regards to basic controls or how to support the team in a meaningful way, if I choose to put some time into the game?

It depends on what you want to do. I'm sure others are better able to give you some combat related tips, but if you are interested in doing some work in logistics, here are some of the first steps you can take:

1. What is a logistic hub?
https://foxholestats.com/
Bookmark that website: it shows you the map, how many players are online and where the fighting is the heaviest, among many other, useful things. For now, we are going to focus on how to locate what are called "logistic hubs". Every hex has either seaports and/or storage depots to store equipment in, as well as a few other useful buildings, such as garage, construction yard, factory, etc. But only about 5 hexes (per faction) have ALL of those facilities concentrated in a single town and these are logi towns or logi hubs. They are crucial for the war effort and that is where most of the basic logistics is being made.

2. How do I find a logistic hub?
In a normal, "North vs South" war, the logistic hubs for the Wardens can be found in the Northern most hex, as well as the two hexes to the East and two hexes to the West of the Northernmost hex. The same is true for the Colonials, but the Southernmost hex, and the two hexes to the West and East of the Southernmost hex.
In wars such as the current one, it is a bit different, but they are usually the five hexes that are further removed from the frontlines.
Go to the foxholestats website and click on the hex called "Faranac Coast" (it is in the North-West roughly) At the top of the website deselect "core" and select "other". Now zoom in on the town the town where you see the most icons. Hover over them and you fill find 1 garage/vehicle factory, 1 refinery, 1 construction yard, 2 factories, 1 Mass Production Factory (MPF) and a Seaport. Those are the most important buildings for basic logistics.
If you are playing as Colonials, you now have all the knowledge to go find a Colonial logistic town: go ahead and try and find one.

3. The basics: refining.
Once you have decided in which logistic town you wish to play, go to a nearest salvage yard. Go there with a truck: You can find one in a seaport, or you can make one yourself with 100 building materials (bmats) at a garage/vehicle factory. You can usually find bmats at a refinery, or maybe in a seaport.
Swing your hammer at the salvage, put the salvage in your truck, drive your truck to the refinery and refine the salvage into bmats.
Bmats are the most important resources in the game. Almost everything requires bmats and you can never have too many bmats. If you do nothing but make bmats all war long, you will be doing very important work.
Now you can do two things:
A: Right click on the refined bmats and select "crate bmats" to take out the bmats in crates. If you do this, you can store the crates in a seaport or depot. You can either put them in your private stockpile (and it will remain private for roughly 48 hours, unless you refresh the timer) or you can put them in a public stockpile, in which case anyone can take those bmats.
B: You can take the bmats (not crated) to a nearby factory and build equipment with it!

4. Making equipment
Take your bmats (uncrated) to a factory and you can use the bmats to make things such as rifle ammo, rifles, bandages, shovels and more. Once your equipment is done, you can again do two things: either put it in your private stockpile in a seaport, or in a public stockpile where anyone can take them. Either way is useful, but if you want to move the equipment to the front yourself: store them in your private stockpile, until you have enough to haul them in bulk.

5. Diversify/expand.
Once you have those 4 steps under control, you can move to expand and diversify. You can also refine salvage into "Explosive Materials" or "emats", which are needed for more sophisticated equipment, such as grenades or shells. bmats and emats will always be useful throughout the war. You can also try to refine sulphur into "Heavy Explosive Materials" or HEMats. You can mine components for "Refined Materials" or Rmats for vehicles and certain specialty equipment.
You can upgrade from using a truck to a flatbed with a container. You need to use a resource container to haul RAW materials (such as salvage, sulphur and components - all uncrated) and you need a shipping container to haul refined materials (such as bmats, emats, rmats, or hemats - all crated) or finished equipment (such as rifle ammo, bandages, uniforms, etc - all crated)

Now you have mastered the basics of what I call "old logi". This is what logistics used to be before 1.0 introduced player made facilities. Player made facilities are way more complicated, should never be done all by yourself, and is better explained by someone more experienced with them.

If you run into any obstacles, or don't understand some parts, your best bet is to ask in "region chat" (hit tabs until your chatbox turns purple) while you are in a logistic hex and chances are that some other logi players will help you out.

Thank you @Iskander. if you start the game and want to learn a bit about Logistics (one of 2 main Jobs in game with Fighting), I highly suggest this YouTube Logistics tutorial by @Freerk Holtes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6tFafmvjDw&t=144s

Game will be a lot easier by starting with Logistics, and as always finding a guild. This is a heavy co-op game, well a MMO.

Respect the grind.

All items (minus hammer/pistol) are made by players. Those items start as mined scrap, then transported to a refinery to be processed, then taken to a factory to be turned into things in the game from respawns to ammo to tanks. As tech unlocks during the duration of the war these items become increasingly more difficult to produce. Higher value items should be used with some respect. Some tanks in the game take a real life day to be built.

Respect other peoples time investments.

I recommend doing some of the basic pipeline logistics work to understand this grind.

So much this. It take take anywhere from hours to days to make anything of significance happen. including time to extract, refine, produce, and transport it from where it is to where it needs to go.

i love this part of it so much since just simple act of scrooping and refining to public is so unbelievably helpful

Yeah, it's important stuff. I can't tell you how many times I just see launchers and higher value items just dropped on the ground near a bunker, etc.

Also good to run back to your pack, if you can, and pick up the kit you pulled. It saves you and everyone else time to scavenge on the field.

If you ever see higher ticket items on the field after fighting, it's always good to try and mule them back to a base. I always try and look for things like radios just because of how vaulable they are. I'm usually playing a bit off the frontline and always watching radars and making callouts in region chat.

just be cool having a good demeanor goes a long way with some ppl whatever role you choose, being a person others want to be around is a bigger deal than being the best at whatever

The game has a lot of content besides the logistics. You can be just as valuable member of the team by being a good frontline participant.

1. Don't take too much ammo, just a rifle and 2 clips will do, you'll find more on the field.
2. Get to cover. Cover stabilizes your aim and makes it harder to hit you. Crouch behind a tree, a sandbag, get into a trench.
3. If you don't seem to hit anything with a rifle, try to get an SMG/LMG and suppress the enemy.
4. Pick up loot and return it to the base.
5. Play a medic, to help the team conserve shirts and save time on respawning.
