A trench is a pain to erase because after it gets destroyed it will leave an husk that also needs to be destroyed with HE grenades or wait for it to despawn so it can take quite a while for you to be able to build anything else out of it's positions or resources.
Resuming, most people will scream at whoever builds trenches cause those people in general don't know how to build trenches so it can't be used by the enemy, it's better to build foxholes or Rifle garrisons cause those provide an active defense in the form of AI when the bunker base is high tech enough and can hold 1 person completely defended of everything but gas and the destruction of the building, or make sandbags which besides also being easy to be used by the enemy are easier to destroy without causing lasting damage to the landscape.
Sorry, you had that negative experience. Trenches are ok, and can be fun, but when you build them too close to active defenses, enemy will just use them against you. Just spam foxholes and turrets if you want to help the team. If you want to dig, make bunkers and then open the windows to the bunkers using bmats so you can shoot the enemy through the bunker. Until the devs add AI to trenches that shoot the enemy, trenches are generally a liability to the team that has AI in the area of the trench, cause the AI can't shoot enemy in trenches.
The best trenches deny the enemy with maximum benefit to you and its a fine art that I am only beginning to understand.
I know examples of where badly made worked for and against myself and others at least 28 hours in.
-Bridge defence: The ramparts were elevated, and someone took initiative to expand our trenches too close without other structures to impede the enemy and it gave them a safe structure to run INTO our emplacements on top of being able to shoot cleanly down at us; they took the opportunity to expand the trench after getting a foothold. It sucked.
-Fort assault: The enemy put down a trench network that led to grenade range of a relic base. People took cover against AI and players; camped the entrances and threw HE grenades to obliterate it rather quickly and safely.
Veterans have tried plenty of building techniques. Trenches in the majority of cases aren't helpful since the opposing team can just take them over unlike foxholes or rifle garrisons.
