Foxhole

Why are people so pissy about trenches?
My friend and I spend 30 or so minutes building trenches to help the defense of the front when this guy comes over yelling at us that we're hurting our team and going to make us lose this front. He got into a truck and destroyed them :/. Dude just started yelling and destroyed them. Nice way to treat new players that are trying to figure things out. New to the game and love it but it can be a bit toxic.

Trenches are passive defenses that enhances whoever is inside of them being you or the enemy, an enemy can take over the trench with a grenade and then use it against you.

A trench is a pain to erase because after it gets destroyed it will leave an husk that also needs to be destroyed with HE grenades or wait for it to despawn so it can take quite a while for you to be able to build anything else out of it's positions or resources.

Resuming, most people will scream at whoever builds trenches cause those people in general don't know how to build trenches so it can't be used by the enemy, it's better to build foxholes or Rifle garrisons cause those provide an active defense in the form of AI when the bunker base is high tech enough and can hold 1 person completely defended of everything but gas and the destruction of the building, or make sandbags which besides also being easy to be used by the enemy are easier to destroy without causing lasting damage to the landscape.

Sorry, you had that negative experience. Trenches are ok, and can be fun, but when you build them too close to active defenses, enemy will just use them against you. Just spam foxholes and turrets if you want to help the team. If you want to dig, make bunkers and then open the windows to the bunkers using bmats so you can shoot the enemy through the bunker. Until the devs add AI to trenches that shoot the enemy, trenches are generally a liability to the team that has AI in the area of the trench, cause the AI can't shoot enemy in trenches.

It's a liability even when you don't have AI as players will also have trouble to shoot enemies on trenches in case you lose them and trenches change hands quite easily with frag nades.

Trenches are very good, the problem that I have noticed is that trenches are placed in terrible areas and are lost to the enemy easily, so now the enemy has the advantage

The problem of the community are the conservative views of "veterans" of foxhole on everything. They just don't like trying something new like building trenches. That is why they are so toxic about new players being creative and want to harrass everyone so that they stop progressing

Trenches are tricky to do right as Astral said; they are holes in the ground that takes no sides if made wrong.

The best trenches deny the enemy with maximum benefit to you and its a fine art that I am only beginning to understand.

I know examples of where badly made worked for and against myself and others at least 28 hours in.

-Bridge defence: The ramparts were elevated, and someone took initiative to expand our trenches too close without other structures to impede the enemy and it gave them a safe structure to run INTO our emplacements on top of being able to shoot cleanly down at us; they took the opportunity to expand the trench after getting a foothold. It sucked.

-Fort assault: The enemy put down a trench network that led to grenade range of a relic base. People took cover against AI and players; camped the entrances and threw HE grenades to obliterate it rather quickly and safely.

Veterans have tried plenty of building techniques. Trenches in the majority of cases aren't helpful since the opposing team can just take them over unlike foxholes or rifle garrisons.
Trenches are honestly an attacking tool. 3 dudes with shovels and some grenades can edit existing trenches to gain extremely advantageous angles on entire flanks. There's a few guides out there, but the best way to make trenches useful on a front is to make them a hassle for the enemy to cross and weave through while giving players plenty of rifle garrisons and hidey holes to ambush unwary attackers trying to flank. Try to find someone high ranking building some trenches and help them out with the digging. You'll learn a lot about decent placement. Foxhole is filled with idiots who take this imaginary war too seriously. Call the other side baby eaters and bayonet charge to your heart's content.

Lets dive into a specific example. A trench is basically free. It gives more cover than a single sand bag and protects well against imprecise grenades and especially Artillery. The downside is obvious. The enemy can just as easily use the trench as yourself. In order to prevent giving the enemy a free trench you can add some protections like barbed wire facing towards the enemies position. If they get into the trench you can place sand bags on your side of the trench which prevents enemies from shooting out of it in your direction. Remember though that tier 1 trenches can be easily run over and instantly destroyed. So youd have to upgrade the trench to tier 2 which i believe is 50 bmats. so lets say you go all the way and dig a trench, put barbed wire on 1 side and 3 sands bags on the other side (3 is required for the full length) your looking at 50+30+30 = 120 Bmats. Trenches dont shoot back. With 120 Bmats you could put down 2 foxholes and still have 20bmats left over for a fence or barbed wire. This gives you passive protection that you dont get with a hole in the ground. Not to mention the downsides of a trench. IE building it too close to something important on your team, the enemy will take advantage of cover to throw HE's at all your stuff and youve basically gifted them an easy victory. Heres what i consider even worse. A trench gets built but is destroyed leaving a husk. The other day a misplaced trench made it so that i couldnt finished building a Bunker. In order to destroy said trench it required 60 HE grenades. 30 for the trench 30 for the husk. There is no other low tier way to destroy these buildings other than waiting for them to decay which can literally take 1+ in real life days. Being prevented from building crucial infrastructure in a dire time of need. It is SO easy to misplace a trench in a way to will hurt rather than help your team. and quickly digging a trench can cause lasting pain. If you ever try to build a large complex you will quickly find that placement becomes a huge issue to the point that id almost recommend laying out your whole base before starting. So in conclusion. Its extremely easy and cheap to dig yet extremely difficult and painful to remove and layout properly and your in most cases better off building a foxhole and a fence to support your team because most of the time youll ♥♥♥♥ up and actually hurt the team your trying to help.

i dislike the foxhole/rifle garrison spam. makes an awful hard to navigate mess. i like trench systems you can navigate. theyre fun! i know lots of foxhole players dislike fun and only play to WIN at any cost
