each salvage field is assigned Iron or Aluminum when it respawns, As you mine the salvage it will sometimes spawn an Aluminum or Iron Nodes

Aluminum is visible, but iron is not.

make sure you horde it all- hide it, where there is no watch towers. To compete with people that when it (iron /aluminum) spawns on the field - run over to mine it. I dont mine honestly as a solo operative- now, at least when the technology tree isn't a rampant undertaking of clash for which selection.
