I recently answered a similar question in another thread so I'll copypaste the explanation:

So there are a few aspects to that - when you log out, your items stay in your inventory, unless:
• War changes
• Your sleeping body is killed when logging out before it disappears (more on that in a minute)
• Faction is switched through a moderator
• You are unable to rejoin the region you logged out in directly (this I'll need confirmation on because it's how it has been but I haven't tested it recently, but I'm somewhat sure) (more on that in a minute)

When you log out, your character kneels down and "goes to sleep". He will exist for a few seconds before disappearing altogether from player view. During this time, a player may shoot the body, which will drop your inventory as normal. This system helps prevent "combat-logging" (can't simply log out behind enemy lines or mid combat for example), and helps reduce griefability, as someone can't simply pull out a ton of resources and just logout as easily to deprive them or hoard them, as that would go against the core belief of teamwork and everything being shared between your faction.

As far as not being able to rejoin the region - I'd need confirmation on this from others or from a dev on how it works lately, but typically when you log out in a front-line region, say, Deadlands, you can log back in there with your stuff in tact. However, if that region has been fully taken over by the enemy faction making it so you can't travel there directly from the home region when logging back in, your inventory won't simply "teleport" to the other regions.

When I log out, I typically put everything of value in the closest FOB or Portbase so others may use it. I never really expect to have it when I log back in. Maybe I'll log out with a single gun or something, but that's not really a waste in the grand scheme of things. I wouldn't worry about logging out with a normal set of gear, as if it goes away, it was so cheap it would take a short couple minutes to make up for those supplies because it's so minuscule.

And that's my overly elaborate wall of text. If you have any other questions though, I recommend dropping by the http://discord.gg/foxhole, where there's loads of people willing to answer any you have, and all kinds of discussions going on.
