How much are the endings affected by bound character deaths?
Hey there. I'm currently into my third playthrough of Pathologic 2 and I was wondering how much the endings are affected if the Haruspex's bound characters die, specifically the Diurnal ending.

On my first playthrough I wasn't able to save Sticky and Notkin, but the Diurnal ending didn't seem to be affected as much in terms of what was shown to me or gameplay. So, apart from probably missing conversations with them during the ending, is there another noticeable change, like alternative cutscenes or imagery?

Also, in terms of story and lore after the ending, is the Town's fate affected as well? I gathered that the kids on the list have an array of important values fundamental to rebuilding the town after the plague is gone. For example, Sticky would be a potential successor to Artemy as a healer, Taya would probably be the last remaining connection between the Kin and the people of modern culture after the wonders of the earth are gone, Khan would possibly be a strong political figure and leader, Capella's kindness and care would be important to probably teach others to be better people and avoid violence, etc.

So, their deaths would probably prevent the Town from healing properly in different ways, right? The new connections between people would be either missing or incomplete, possibly hinting that the cycle of death may repeat even if the living earth and the plague are gone.

Is this the main motivation to keep them alive specifically? I did save them either way obviously, but I started thinking that other characters that aren't bound to the Haruspex are still very important to the town, like the Olgismkys and the Kains.

The game never explicitly shows the consequences of the death of bound characters, that's why I got curious and started thinking about this topic. I'm curious to hear what you guys got out of the ending as well. Thanks for reading.

Okay, MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT

There are two endings in the game. Okay, three, but the third one feels more like a non-standard game over. Which ending you get is determinde by a single quest on day 11: if you do trace the papers and bring them to General Block - you get the Day ending. If you burn the papers - you get the Night ending. That's it, no other things you did or didn't do not affect the ending. You can try and find the panacea, you can abandon it entirely. You can run around town like madman trying to help everyone or you can kiss the town goodbye and concentrate on your own survival - nothing changes in the global picture of events.
--
Now, the Day ending allows you to free roam around The Town and talk to everyone of importance. Those who died are replaced by shadows (or tragedians if you prefer), so you can't really have any dialogues out of them and learn of what they are going to do next. So, this day 12 is the closes thing you get to those classic Fallout-style "where they are now" endings.

As for reasons for saving people... Well, because you like them? Or because you feel like you have to? Why did you play the game at all? Technically, you don't get anything out of it, the game doesn't really punish you for not saving someone. Aside from cutting you of the piece of content. Which, actually, corresponds with the main theme of the game: your life is in your hands and you can do absolutely anything you want. At the same time - you're never alone, and things you do will affect others, so be prepared for concequences.

The fate of The Town after the outbreak (in case of Day ending) is very open. And that, again, I think is deliberate. Pathologic tells the story of overcoming the crisis. Techincally, whatever happens after is not relevant. At the same time, it's one of the themes (again): yes, you do whatever it takes to live another day, but if you stop and think for a moment, you'll see how that "whatever" can shape the history long after all the dangers are gone.

In the end of the day - does death of bound characters affect the ending? Yes and no. From the gameplay perspective - no. From the story perspective - no, because the outbreak will end one way or another. And yes - because everything that happened in this story will shape the future story of the Town.
