what architectural style did they based the buildings on ?
I've seen some similarities with the syberia saga and I was wondering if someone in the forums knew the source of inspiration for the world of pathologic:leftamark:

There's a lot of different styles at play in this game. I'd say Constructivist influences are obvious. The Steppe tents are definitely Mongolian. The houses feel like they were inspired by Far East Russia, though I'm not sure of a specific style. Soviet era, maybe.

I personally feel the architecture was designed to be anachronistic, after all the town is very unique to The Powers That Be; a place where multiple drastically different eras of human history just co-exist together; a place where many contridictions seem to co-exist peacefully, at least before the plague came along

also, i just get the feeling that some of the rooftops[pathologic-game.com] are intentionally designed to invoke the image of a cow, you know because the steppe religion worships a world-bull god. I think the architecture lends itself to the biology themes (supplementing the fact that streets are already named after body parts and anatomy; possibly that of a bull)

I do feel the interiors of generic houses resemble more modern eastern european apartments

One element of the anarchronisms are the fact that the indoors of an average house houses cooking stoves resembling that of the 1960's, despite the rest of the furniture looking more of the renaissance era or something. Also, the civilians in the Utopian district (western end of the town near the polyhedron) dress like 18th century aristocrats, and yet the more east you go in the town, you see more casually clothed adults in freaking denim jeans and leather jackets

The remake is adding a new visual motif for the town where they want to make some pieces of furniture look "unbalanced" to reflect the "unbalanced" nature of the town. IPL made an article in the remake's kickstarter a while back that should help enlighten you about the architecture.

IPL definantly intended for the architecture to be very ambiguous (when you finish Changeling's story, you will understand that the entire world of pathologic is literally a work of fantasy, a manifestation of either the morbid thoughts of The Powers That Be or the Game Devs themselves who created the town specifically to test the Player's (who is technically a character in the story, independant of the 3 protagonists) ability to "make free and independant choices." After all the original game manual specifically states that the game is a "decision-making simulator"

The style is Khrushchevka (which is Modernism) met Art Nouveau and Gothic (which is not only about cathedrals and arc-boutants).

It has nothing to do with Far East Russia which looked exactly like every other Russia, i.e. a blend of Classicism, Art Nouveau, Russian Revival and Eclectics featuring elements of all this plus the Gothic and Neo Baroque. There were no permanent settlements in Siberia and Far East outside of China, hence there were no style other than what Russians brought, except maybe scattered Buddhist temples around Mongolia.

In fact, Pathologic architecture has nothing to do with any of real Russian stile, except it is Soviet urban planing of 60-70es with 90es "fence corruption" stylized by Art Nouveau elements to make it early 19 century feel and Gothic for the feeling of dread and plague.

Pathologic 2 mansions, like Stillwater or Theater, had evolved into a mixture of Neo Baroque and Social Realism a.k.a. Stalinemp of regional quality, which is the only real phenomena in Russia (google Saransk Opera Theater (2011) or Mordovia National Drama Theater (2007) same place) but I don't think it got the name yet.

Interesting thread.

What would you say about their other game - The Void? It has less architecture, but still.

it's kind of hard to point out something that is so cerebral and abstract, most of the chamber of the sisters are base in their personality, ire it's a zeppelin base on the war, uta it's like a calm breeze everything seem still and the moon it's looking down at her, but if you are talking about the upper realm than it's pretty close to pathologic.
