Snow affecting train speed
Curious about the snow speed during winter months when snow is active. Looks like the trains slow down to 6 kph, where 70 kph is norm during spring through fall. Is there a research item that allows the trains to move a little faster in snow? I could imagine 20-40 kph but 6 kph seems unrealistically slow. New to the game but loving it so far!

Sorry to bump, but looking for an answer. On another note, I've never noticed my trains losing sand. Is it meant for high inclines? I guess I'm cautiously sticking to flat terrain so that may be why.. Thanks!

I've have not seen anything that would have a positive effect on the speed in snow. A 90%+ drop in speed is a bit much. 70% seems more realistic for an average drop.
As for sand usage. It seems water most, then oil, then sand. It tops all three when it stops at a supply tower. I've never paid close attention because I have enough towers to keep the trains from running out of water.

Snow is a lazy implementation. It only cripples our trains and that's it ! No research nor game mechanics with for example tractive power to deal with it. A very disappointing game feature.

Didn't have any problems with snow. I like this mechanic. It do teach you - what Whouses are for. With proper setup, I've been running far north pelt farm (less than 2 month without snow) non stop and growing 2 northest towns on Canadian map, no problems.
I do enjoy snow - it's nice challenge

I like the snow too especially on 100-year Free Mode games. I doagree that the penalty is pretty severe.

It's amazing to compare this to trains only lose 1-2mph for running out of water. This could obviously be balanced better. :)

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I haven't been having problems with making money in the snow, I was just curious when I first bought the game. I'm from Winnipeg, so I like to start my Free Mode games with that being home base. Makes the start a bit slower but rewarding once I branch out a bit more. Looking forward to the German and Frence DLC!

I see the snow like this: It blocks the line (by giving the trains a very low speed) for a certain period. So you have to use warehouses and/or accept that towns/rural industries in the north are 'out of use' in the winter.
