If you play the first scenario they will explain it to you, it acts as a tutorial, not very good in my opinion, but here it is: click on track construction, put your cursor on a track and go right or left, continue till the place where you want to connect and click, also if it turns red, go a bit more on the right or left...

More explanation. Click on "Track", click on the existing track where you want the side-track to start, then drag alongside the existing track for 3 miles until your new track shows green; click again to set a track point. Then continue to drag alongside the existing track for at least 13 miles, click another track point, and join back to the existing track ( which takes another 3 miles). Now add directional signals so that each track is one-way, and a stop signal just before the exit from each of the two lines.
You need 13 miles to accommodate the length of a train, but there's no reason why you should not make the side track longer, perhaps a lot longer - in which case you can add multiple signals. But in the first campaign you absolutely must place the first side track exactly where the "searchlights" show you, and do this after you have been instructed.

Hi everybody,
it also makes sense to have a look into the developer-made videos that come up with additional tips and tricks:

I've played this game for days and can't figure out how to get past this point. At the first mission in the campaign, there's a point where it says "First, create a side track. It needs to be at least long enough for a fully loaded train." Nothing I do works. The developer-made videos are not clear.

rff1: how would one know what 3 or 13 miles are? where's the scale?

start at 17:48 at this video and you'll see what I mean:

Bumberbog - as you draw the track, the length you have drawn is shown in the upper-right panel, as is the current cost. The dollar-sign button for "pay and build" is greyed out until the end of current tracklaying is reached, either by rejoining the new track to an existing one or by right-clicking, and if any part of the new track shows red (the reason for which appears at bottom left of the screen).
