Trains dont turn around, run to end of line

i have a set up where ill have 1-3 trains (depending on resources around city) run and gather multiple commodities. the issue? when one of the rescorces are on my main line connection, instead of turning around at that station, it will run to the end of the line then bounce all the way back to the next destination. So it slows my income so badly i cant do the campaign as i fail due to lack of cash. How can i get an engine to turn around? do i need to manually build a turnaround over the mainline? or make all the resource locations branch lines? is it possible to do what im attempting? thanks all

Train is going to follow the path you have set for them.

Sounds like you are running directional track through a station. Trains can't jump platforms in the station. Naturally lines terminate in a single platform somewhere. This allows trains to get on the track going in the other direction. They will find the nearest one.

What you need is a switch connecting both tracks on approach to the station. Put these right up against the station, signals to be placed beyond switch.
