Y junction between double tracks
I feel sure it must be possible to create a Y junction where all routes are double track but I am damned if I can figure out how! Any help appreciated.

I couldn't do it in beta without making a loop and crossing over with a bridge. Game was not meant to be played with double tracks.

it will be impossible to model English railways then! All main lines in England were double tracked from the 1840s onwards (and London to Derbywas quad tracked some time before 1900 - it almost needed one set of double tracks just for the coal traffic!).
American railways are conceptual different from European railways in this respect: in the US it was all about distance, in Europe it was all abou volume.

Normal looks like the switches are too close and likely to cause trouble.

How about a turbine interchange like on the motorway 😂

You can probably do it but it needs a lot of free space. In RE the Minimum Curve Radius for tracks is 5-6 miles.

I originally started out using a variation of the "Normal" method. It looks like this

But now I'm almost exclusively using the "tiny" method. The difference is that less space/tighter radii are possible with the only expense being slightly higher risk of congestion. Basically if there is an incoming train while another is attempting to divert, there will be a small delay because both must use the same small "entrance" ramp.

I made the adjustment to the "tiny" method about the time that I realized that station platforms are the biggest restriction on traffic flow. As long as any junctions are a couple full train lengths away, the "tiny" method should be able to handle about as much traffic as you can push through the station. Unless there's a breakdown.

All these patterns are fine. The closer the switches the better. Only rarely will they bug and you will know right away, but I think some of that has been fixed since beta. It's down to you to place signals correctly, especially directional (red) so trains wait in the right places for a clear track.

Good construction.

Your pictures show what I had in mind when placing the junctions for normal. I probably started connecting the wrong track first and so the curve of my 2nd track strike out too much.

Looks impressive, what grade is on the cruves?

I was lucky and it is around 2-3% only. I started with the bridges and curves and it worked well.

The whole junction construction is about 30 miles x 36 miles wide.

In other cases the system gives you 20% or tries to tunnel below the other track and you have to add more points and correct things and it does not come out as you wish. Then you probably should go back to a savegame and try again.

Are you talking about the tracks between the double lanes to intersect them together so trains pass after they leave the station? If so click on make railway tool click on track right after station and draw a line to the other track in small space. Don't go to short or to long & it will turn green eventually and then buy $ track. Seeing the railways do not crisscross you have to do it again in front of the other one you just laid. You can do the same idea with a single lane (your first initial campaign taught you how to lay a two lane track (but doesn't let you choose lanes in station) But in the end your able to draw more tracks to a single lane track... where a double track you have to bridge or tunnel to get to the other side.

So I saw this which is pre-built by the AI in chapter 4. A player is unable to build something like this? Or how to do it?

This is thread is redundant since update 1.4 was released giving true Y junctions as seen in your picture. Have a look at this post and the one below it. https://steamcommunity.com/app/503940/discussions/0/1693788202022056425/#c3211505894120214709

How to do it?
Connect a single track curve to your existing double track somewhere. After confirming the build, you will see a smaller cone on the opposite line. This is the point to connect to when doubling the curve you just built.

Thanks a lot!

You need to be careful with the curvature of your first branch track. If it's too gentle, when you try the second track it says "too close to an existing track" - goodness knows why.
When you've made the double turnout, be careful with the signalling, You need stop signals on the 3 tracks leading to the junction, and any other stop signals must, as usual, be at least one train length away from the junction.
