1890 Pacific Coast Scenario Portland to San Diego
This is the only scenario that I cannot win. I am required to bulid a direct connection between Portland and San Diego. At first, I tried to run through major cities and that did not gain credit. Then I went almost direct, passing only through a wheat depot and a corn depot. Still no luck. Then I by-passed everything, no water towers or stations, still nothing. The requirment seems to be 779 miles or less. Then I spent 6 million going in almost a striaght line, digging tunnels, building long bridges, and still no luck. The best I can do is about 850 miles in length. Any thoughts?

When you are laying track there is info on how long the queued build is in the top right corner, same place as the cost. It's possible, just very tight. Have to hug the Sierras pretty tight.

Trying to get the direct line under 779 miles requiress micro-managing pixels to the max. WIth certain station and railway builds by the AI opponents, it may not be possible. After 20+ tries, I can make it to within 5 miles of the goal, but never better.

I have almost 130 hours invested in Railway Empire. I like many facets of the game. But one must suspend reality to think that in 1899 or 1900, there would be a call for a direct, non-stop rail line from Portland to San Diego, bypassing all towns and businesses, while requiring tunelling, grading, and bridgework technology that did not even exist on such a massive scale.

I think I will put this game to rest and move on. I have no regrets. I figure I spent $0.31 per hour, not bad for that much entertainment and brainwork.

These might help. I re-visited it myself and clearly liking the East side of the mountains more. No tunnels and quasi-sensible grades. As a dirty build and with a steep ramp into Portland, station oriented North-South, build was originally 753mi. I re-did the Portland station and used extra miles to make it nicer.

Thank you for the photos. On the third try this morning, I completed the direct line with two miles to spare...Whew! That allowed me to win as president. I do think that I will move on for a while, but I may return to Railway Empire in the future. Again, thank you for your time and efort.
