50 loads of lumber to Rock Island
I had fun on senario #1 & #2, but the third one has now failed four times. I just cant seem to get a steady flow of lumber to Rock Island. it seems real buggy. I tried building a saw mill at madison and was never able to build one in time. I even see my trains hauling logs from Rock Island bacl to Toledo. I even tried a Wharehouse near Madison and did store 99 logs. My trains haul full loads of logs to Toledo and leave the station with only one or two loads of lumber. I must be missing something simple about this one.
Anyone got any insight?

Use a Sawmill to turn Wood into Lumber.

The AI builds industries in open City slots fairly fast, so watch out for a "City Grows" icon and grab the new spot if available. If not, hope the AI builds a Sawmill near Rock Island, or buy up a useless Industry, destroy it, and build a Sawmill (expensive process.)

If you have extra money, you can upgrade to a higher level for higher production and hit the goal faster - if you have trains running the supply chain to soup it up.

use the city of madison and build a sawmill there (if there is not one there already) then have a train go from the closest wood source to the Madison, and then prioitize lumber from Madison to go to Rock Island. If you need to up production, make it to where one train takes the wood to Madison, and the other from madison to Rock Island for the lumber. Good luck man!

The beauty of the Madison Sawmill is that the city of Madison has no demand for Lumber until it grows, so the city wont keep back some of the production for itself.

The easiest is to build it first thing when you start the game. You will have a bit less cash, but it should guarantee completion. Double up the line from Madison to Rock Island into an up-down configuration and buy at least two trains. Don't run trains from Madison to Chicago or other cities unless you specify that they shouldn't haul Lumber, or just limit them to passengers and mail. Good luck!

Like gadit, one of the first things I do is buy a sawmill in Madison. It's just a no brainer vs trying to haul anything across the map from Toledo.

I establish a line to Chicago early on and allow Lumber for the cash. It takes a little bit of time for Rock Island to open up, I use it to make some money and to get the Factory in full swing before I need to depend on it.

I use the extra cash to upgrade the sawmill at least once and to connect a logging camp. Ideally, I want all that done and working before RI becomes available.

Once it's open, double line from Madison. Chicago trains get no Lumber and RI trains get Priority Lumber uber alles. I run 4 trains on that line, more if I have to. I want that bridge done ASAP.

If you take a minimalist approach and time everything right, you can get out of this mission pretty quick. It's definitely doable, the real key being don't dilly dally with anything that isn't on the list.

Cheers..!

As an alternate story, I built up infrastructure and lines for the various cities an a pretty organic way without particularly prioritizing Madison. I had plenty of time to get the job done for max score, so you don't really need to bee-line this particular task - but you can't waste much time in building out general economy and hitting goals. The final task was then trivial. Just thought I'd put in a vote for an approach less focused on that particular goal.

Kek, I haven't realized that you could build your own industries, and I only had sawmills back in Omaha. I ended up throwin a second station and using pretty much an express line for lumber between Omaha and Rock Island. That was silly.

I actually used the sawmill from the city in the far East, I can't think of the name and made a double track directly to roc hill. No stops or any other things in it's way. I put on 4 trains all set for wood only and then brought wood into that eastern city literally by the train load, lol. This worked fine.

Hmm! thats exactly what I did and it worked perfectly.

There are two logging camps near Madison. I used the one to the east at first as the fat woman stereotype had already built a station covering the one to the north so I avoided the competition for the logs. Had a dedicated line deliver the logs to Madison where I built a saw mill (or there might have been one there I can't remember) then had a freight line deliver the lumber to Rock Island.

That was actually the only connection I had to Rock Island at the time so there was no distraction about delivery. Madison had a connection to Chicago, but I don't remember any problems with bleed off and i may have made it passenger only.

Oh, also, in my game Rock Island already had sawmils and I shipped logs in it, thinking that's what I need to do. Apparently that doesn't work :/

. .
Correct. I neglected to mention that you can't get to Rock Island before you have connected 250,000 inhabitants, so the idea with building the Sawmill beforehand is just to make sure the slot isn't filled with something else.

A while back I had an attempt to get through this one quickly. Best result was 1 year 4 months on hardest settings. Growing Toledo requires most actual time to complete. I did not build the Madison Lumber Mill straight away, so it depends on what you are trying to achieve as to what strategy you should use. Are you trying to just get through or optimize completition?

No! I saw that and concluded it was a trick. Even if it did work there were no logs nearby, so i decided it was a bad idea.

You could use it by building a nearby Warehouse, shipping out to the Warehouse then back to Rock Island. I'm pretty sure that would work and would cost less than building a Sawmill. It's pretty gamey.

Thanks everyone for the help, I used bits and parts of everyone. Did finally get it done, I was just trying to pass it for now and once I go through everything once, I will go back and do each one over to try and ace them all. I did use a warehouse right near rock island, stored 99 logs there, then stored 99 lumber there. When rock island opened up, I just had a short run of full loads of lumber from warehouse to RI.

The warehouse idea works - Provided sawmill setup Madison. Then warehouse somewhere between Madison and Rock island and set priorty to lumber.
Andi Jul 5, 2018 @ 5:03pm
This one doesn't for work me either. I had a lumber yard directly connected to Rock Island and I even all the lumber being unloaded but it didn't count. Why not? If I try to build a sawmill, it says there's no room for new industry. Can't win either way.
