Gameplay vs RRT2 (greatest train game ever)?
The videos on the store page have peaked my interest, but I'm wondering if any players could size it up versus Railroad Tycoon 2?

Do the campaign missions feel similar? I read that the missions are only like 20 years, and the maps are small. Are there any 'link LA to Chicago' like missions, or just smaller shorter missions?

Do you find yourself spending a lot of time designing the best route? From a post it sounded like elevation doesn't slow you down; true?

I spent a lot of time in RRT2 gathering resources with slow, low maintenance trains that would deliver to a station, and had faster more high maintenance trains then take the goods to be produced elsewhere. Any similarities in this?

Do you have full control over routes like setting up cars at each station, telling them to wait for cargo or not, having express trains with right of way over other trains, and all that sweet sweet strategy?

Thanks.

I picked up RRT3 this week, and have a edition that runs in Windows 10 without a problem. It was a great game... back then, and I had fond memories of it.....till I played it now. A lot has happened in 15 years. It doesn't stack up today. Hold on to your memories.- you'll shatter them if you played RRT today.

The game covers only the "Golden Age Of Steam" The maps are NOT small, but they only cover about 1/5 of the US at a time. There is a veriaty of mission types concerning cargo, cities, money, etc.

Elevation matters! Trains will slow down for steep tracks. Lucky for us, we can adjust it. I've seen many YT's and YTer's tend to work on the route horizonally, but rarely the vertical aspect. Me? Yes, I tend to spend quite a bit of time adjusting the route for the fastest and/or most ecomomical way to lay tracks.

You can play it any way you want. There's "express trains" for passengers and mail, warehouses for "hub-like" cargo distribution, etc.

There is a "manual" mode, which I haven't messed with, to mess with the consist, and you can specify the minumin/maximum number of cars if you want. But "auto" seems to work quite well (it will change consists for you automatically at stations, which in the long run, is easier, moves the most cargo, and makes you the most money).

I enjoy this game quite a bit! However, it sounds like you love to micro-manage trains and consists, so probably Transport Fever would be more to your liking. Just be aware that you can't set it to change consists at stations (only depots, and that isn't very cost effective or efficient). I know of no (current) game that lets you change consists at stations. Also with TPF you can't set up "express" trains that have priority over freight- but you can have faster engines, wagons, and track for an "express" line.

Bottom Line: if you're looking for another RRT, there isn't one (and never will be). Course, RRT isn't like this one, or Transport Fever, or A-Train, or TTD, or Simutrans, or Locomotion, or Transports, or any other train game, either! They're all different from each other, and each has it's own good and bad points.

I'd suggest you watching a few YouTubes and see which game is best for you. For this game you might check this YT out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mlv9sz5B7bo
