It really looks like a spiritual successor to SMR. Granted I haven't played it myself, but from what I've seen it definitely has the same look and feel.

Sid Meiers Railroads is much more toy-like. This game is much more simulator, although with a cartoon-like graphics.

Dont mix up Sid Meiers Railroads (Toy Train Game) and Sid Meiers Railroad Tycoon (Train Management Sim)

You could ride the train in first person in RRT3.
