Underrated game?
Seen this game around on Steam for a while but never piqued my interest. After skimming on youtube I came across this video - top 5 underrated games and Spec Ops was #1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG5QB4RVdfg

So is this game really the Diamond in the rough?

I believe Spec Ops and Insurgency and Battlefield Bad Company 2 are the most epic FPS in the world.

I bought it for 4 euro and played it this weekend. Short game, but as you may have already read, it has an excellent story. I can confirm that. Several days later still thinking about it. Played the story twice.

I think it's quiet underated... i liked it a lot! Reminds me of Gears of War in some way!

I'm currently in the middle of playing it, as far as "military shooter" games go, this one has the best story ever. I literally cried at one point.

Saw a couple of review on Youtube and love game settling, atmosphere and voice acting. Game is on my wishlist, just not sure about spending so much $ for such a short game. I read somewhere a gemer manage to finish the game in just 3 hours. **THREE HOUUUUUURS!!!** prob wait until its 75% off

Dude, Spec Ops isn't a FPS... it's a Third Person Shooter.

And to answer the original question: I bought the game when it was on a -80% discount because of the anniversary of 2K. I played it trough and actually enjoyed a lot, I'd recommend it ;).

It's a short game, yes, but not three hours short. I mean... you can probably beat it in that amount of time, sure... if you play on Easy and rush through it and skip all the cutscenes.

Of course, I suspect the same people who do that are probably the same ones who then come here and complain that they didn't understand the story and couldn't relate to any of the characters.

If you're actually playing like you're supposed to (ie on harder difficulty, paying attention to the story, and not trying to "speedrun" through it), you'll probably get 6-8 hours out of it.

Which is still kind of short, but actually feels about right for this type of game. It delivers it's message without feeling overly long and drawn out.

Maybe I just suck... I got the game yesterday and I still haven't finished the story. I put in at least 4 hours last night and roughly 4 hours tonight. To be fair certain parts have kept kicking me in the nuts due to my PC specs being kind of... well terrible. Sometimes frame-rate drops or janky mouse controls cost me...

Actually this game is pretty brutal... It's absolutely underrated however. I'm trying not to spoil anything but it's absolutely worth it. The story is grim, dark and strange. Every time I think I have it figured out, it twists again and I'm back to square one. Which with this game is questioning yourself, your morals and everything you know.

Got this ages ago, tried it, and it just didn't grab me...

Tried playing it again, and really loving it.
Have still not finished yet, but know already I will play it again to see how the game plays differently if I make different choices.

As a game, above average 3rd person shooter, decent graphics and a very unique environment.
As an experience though, already it has made me stop in my tracks on a number of occasions and question what to do next, and the choices I am making.

I will not ruin it for you, but best I can say is the most surprising game I have played.
Oh and do not reload a level to change your choices, live with the consequences ;)

Very good game, even if short (less than 10 hours).
Play it in max difficulty level else it'll be too easy.
Very good military shooter, arcadish, with a disturbing dark story..

the singleplayer is supposed to give you the feels by taking away choice to tell a story (the typical "interactive movie" cliche really - "manipulative" to get a point across) and the multiplayer was done by some other dev (medal of honor reboot anyone?)
I cant help but feel I wasted 5 hours in some apocalypse now redux extended cut that actually expected me to press w all the time to keep on movin forward and feels prowd for being a glorified quick-time-event.
Thats the only good thing about the gameplay though, it doesnt have the now mandatory qtes or "you have to do one thing 200 times in this game? lets make the animation last for 20 seconds and also make it unskippable!"-thing (like the heavy beams in thief - oh how I loved pressing those away 50 times...)
the loading screen texts are also nice.

Oh, I loved this game. At first I hated it so much but more I played, the more I liked it and learned that it's the best example of not everything in FPS being around shooting people. I just finished it with 50/50 achievements and for once I can say that I really enjoyed it. My honest recommendation would be to play it and enjoy. Follow the story and embrace the fact that it's not just another brainless shooter.

I like it for trying to do something different, story wise. Gameplay is pretty average though.
Story: 8/10
Gameplay: 5/10
Overall: 6/10
If you're not playing it for the story, I wouldnt bother.
