You can try to shoot, and the whole army starts shooting back at you. In the end, you run out of bullets and you die via snipers in other rooftops.
Developers wanted to make it more interesting choice, like you actually get overrun, but console/engine limits diminished that, so its kinda automatic kill via sniper

Snipers respawn on the spot or so I've heard, making the battle impossible to win.

You can do it but will run out of bullets and get overrun by snipers everytime you try to shot them.
