Estival versus or Burst renewal
First time playing a senran kagura game, was wondering whether to get this or burst renewal. Estival seems to have more content and is cheaper however burst renewal is the first game. atm I'm leaning on getting estival, will I be completely lost story wise if I don't play burst?

IIRC Estival Versus is almost a spin-off with all the characters from the main games, except it's canon apparently. Its gameplay is fairly slow compared to Shinovi Versus, and Burst Re:Newal should be a good middle ground between both.

If you want to play the series for the story, play Burst Re:Newal, then Shinovi Versus, Estival Versus and Peach Beach Splash. I don't remember where Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson stands in the lore though, I think it's after Burst but in the main (non-Versus) timeline.

Else, I'd recommend playing the games in their release order (except PBS which isn't really necessary), especially since the character roster and graphics evolved with each new release.

Sorry for the long (and possibly confused/confusing) reply, I'm tired and haven't played the games enough myself to know in what order to play them ^_^'

Thanks for the reply, might look a little more into it all. Having an understanding of the story would be nice, tho from looking around burst renewal has the least amount of characters/customisation (being the first game and all) however you can get more of them through DLC? Might just get estival versus and if I like that buy burst renewal later or when its on sale.

If you don't have Shinovi Versus, I'd recommend starting from there. It's a port from a Vita game so it's not exactly the most beautiful SK game, but at least you can have a good overview of the gameplay and characters. Plus it's the cheapest of the bunch and has all of its DLC included in the Steam version.

Oh nice, might give that a look then. Perhaps go with shinovi versus then estival and then burst re
Thanks again.

You're welcome :D

between EV and Burst;Re, you get Burst;Re
there are a few things that EV has over it:
-multiplayer
-shinobi heart missions (which imo are slightly better than the free missions because of the dialogue between the girls)
-slightly more characters

other than that, burst;re has better boss battles, more responsive guarding and animation cancelling, even better dressing room features (i.e. lingerie being named instead of being designated "pattern ___")

playing senran for the story is a cute reason, but dont expect anything deep
in which case, shinovi versus would follow from burst;re

Estival is much better in general, renewal has some minor improvements gameplay wise but it also removes some minor features (like bombs and the mecha) and it having only 12 base characters means that the stages themselves are very repetitive as you will end up fighting always the same opponents (unless you get the yumi and miyabi dlc which will let you play against some other girls but only an handful more and those DLC stages are particolarly short). The stages are shorter in general too which doesn't help. The boss fight 1v1 (Estival lets you fight against more than 1 opponent occasionaly) are probably better that in the other games but you can tell that the AI is still kinda bad and they are limited (again) by the number of characters.

Estival even without the dlc has more stages (longer too), more playable characters, almost the same graphics (renewal may have some better effects), similar gameplay but due to the amount of situations you can have (I mean the stages and fights) it ends up being far more enjoyable.

The story imho is best experienced in order with Shinovi and then Estival, because what you get from the other games imho is not worth it from the story stand point alone even though I must admit that I don't recall the amount of detail that you get from Shinovi regarding the renewal events, it may be less than I remember. Some may argue that Estival doesn't have much story wise and they are right but it has something it gives you a glimpse of the big threat ahead and closes some threads with some characters.
Shinovi and Estival have the "girl's heart" story for each character which renewal lacks, replacing them with bland and generic free missions.

Bon Appetit is worth it if you like rhythm games and want some inconsequential stories on the level of "girl's heart", however it's kind of mediocre because the song selection is overall very generic outside of the 6 ones with lyrics (the 4 school leaders and 2 "special" characters).

PBS is... not worth it at all imho. The story is something that doesn't add pretty much anything and the gameplay is way less fun than what it looks like in videos.

Ended up buying re burst. Liked the characters and the combat was good, tho the mission stages got really repetitive quickly and they're pretty small, combine that with the lack of base characters and I ended up refunding, got shinovi instead.

Will play through that then get estival and possibly at some point will get re burst again when its cheaper or is on sale.

Will most likely skip bon appetit and PBS, not really my kind of games.
Again, thanks for all the replies and advice!

Well there are two timelines, the main one (originally on 3DS) and the Versus one (where EV looks like a spin-off but isn't). And I mentioned the order in which to play the games, except for Bon Appétit which is completely optional (plus I had no idea where it stood in the chronological order). Also, excuse me for not mentioning Burst Re:Newal is a remake of Burst because I didn't think it was pertinent on top of this information being in the game's description.

I haven't played the games much yet, but I know there's the main series on the one hand and the Versus series (picking up where Burst left off) on the other. Just check the Senran Kagura Wiki (Kagurapedia) if you don't trust me, both Shinovi Versus and Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson take place right after Burst (which is impossible unless they take place in their respective timelines). Burst Re:Newal is likely in the Versus timeline just because it uses their gameplay, aside from that the story should be the same as Burst's.

I know im like super late to this but I beat 2 of the stories in Burst Renewal on ps5 (ps4) and I actually like the gameplay with the parries, super management and the OP burst explosion thing. I actually care very little for the story and skipped 90% of it, so my question is this; is the gameplay relatively the same better or worse? Can I change mission music something i dont think I can do unlike Warriors all stars and other games? I really like warriors like Hyrule, Calamity, Samurai Warriors 4 5 so this hack and slash is pretty fun
