Selecting characters & levels

When do I get to select which character to use and which stage to play? Do I have to play ALL the way through the main plot first? I'm not that far in, but so far there's no "missions" or "shop" options on the menu like I see in the store screenshots.

I'd love to experiment with different girls and see how they all fight. Do I just need to be more patient?

You have to beat the mission once as the intended girl...then you can go back at any time and play previous missions with the girl of your choice. On controller use LB and RB to change to the girl you want to use (lil' anime face at the bottom right corner-ish).

Once you finish day 0 you can start to pick, it's a bit odd, but since it's also the tutorial, understandable.

The full menu, with mission select and shop, is available after finishing the prologue/tutorial (which should be five missions).

Thank you everyone for the info. Since I've just finished 3 levels, I'll obviously see the game open up after a couple more.
