But I don't think it's the issue here. Try verifying your game's files (Steam -> right-click on the game in the list -> Settings -> Local Files), and see if it changes anything.
The OP never posted back to say if his problem was solved and how. In my case, I've solved this problem by creating a folder called "savedata" in the root game folder (the one with SKEstivalVersus.exe).
Beware: I've yet to check if cloud saves still work after this stunt. At very least I'm able to play now.
