There are always enemies that manage to get close to MG1 right near the end of the mission, so that you're forced into attacking them (or they'll shoot down MG1). Then the game just waits for you to fire a missile, and since the enemy you locked on to is so close to MG1, it's easy to see how the allies all think it was you. You can even think it was you yourself on accident.
If you DON'T fire a missile (there's a challenge thing for using only guns), it will eventually trigger anyway.
They do this a lot in the series. For example, sometimes they'll put TARGETs in some remote corner of the map before it nukes three quarters of the map with a superweapon with no warning so that you "luck out" and avoid getting hit. Stuff like that. Really masterful work at telling the story through gameplay.
Same! It is presented in such a weird way and has no conditions anywhere else in the mission. Hope you keep enjoying the game, buddy!
