like i know the story doesn't really matter and it's just an excuse to blow things up but when I saw that it was so jarring and it just seems the tone was all over the place at that point.

I mean... From what I've heard of other games in the series, and what I've seen of other Bandai Namco games, it's entirely par for the course for this to basically be a slightly-more-hamfisted-than-average anime with planes.

Is this just another classic case of someone who buys an Ace Combat game without knowing anything about Ace Combat? It has always been an arcade flyer with fun and totally over the top anime stories and characters.

For most of the games, Ace Combat has basically been Metal Gear Solid but with jets. The story is there and will have some nice lore to it all, but if its not someones cup of tea, just skip the cut-scenes and shoot down some bandits.

to be fair, it's only ace combat 3, 5 and 6 that had this kind of anime story and characters. Hell, zero even had live action cutscenes
