mihaly is basically the villain equivalent of a mary sue

we're supposed to feel bad for poor, precious mihaly and the injustices done to his people, and we're led to believe that he's the best ace pilot in strangereal - one that's supposedly felled every last named ace - all the while he's flying about in his donut steel special custom versions of existing airframes (one of which itself fits the bill as a mary sue aircraft)

to say nothing of his state of being the culmination of all of the previous aces' skills and the only possible template for ZOE because of... very ill-defined reasons that essentially amount to an integration of gameplay and story, i.e. his ridiculous "non-critical damage" abilities manifest as his being some kind of piloting uebermensch
all the while there's nothing remotely interesting or likeable about the character that engenders sympathy, he's just on the wrong side because his fealty demands it

tl;dr - as a character mihaly sux just a little bit more than maverick does

The weirdest part is when Mihaly shows up in Farbanti and then goes into DFM from Assault Horizon to chase another NPC for over a minute. And he's invincible the whole time so you can't do anything, you just have to watch. The devs love him so much that they think we'll actually enjoy spectating him playing Assault Horizon with god mode on. That's their idea of a good time.

it honestly feels as though mihaly was meant to be what one of our previous player characters looks like through the eyes of the random grunts we were slaughtering wholesale, only it turns out that it doesn't make for a very good vessel for storytelling

tvtropes calls it the eight deadly words: "i don't care what happens to this person"
there isn't anything interesting enough about mihaly that makes you care - if not about him as a character - about seeing what becomes of him by the story's end in the same way that yellow 13 or pixy did

because he's not interesting or likeable, but also not so dastardly, gloriously, deliciously evil that we want to see him get his comeuppance?

Ehh, I wouldn't say that. It's been a hot minute since I played AFDS, but there's a difference between Albert and Mihaly.

Now, Mihaly and "Emperor" Sergei Kinski? There's a lot in common between those two.

Sergei's sense of honor and his care for his troops, is comparable to Mihaly's similar senses. And that's just one example.

So yeah, I believe the closest counterpart to Mihaly in AFDS would be Sergei, not Albert.
