I think they key when you're having trouble is to try a different plane or SP weapon, sometimes that can work wonders.
I was using the A-10 last night, as much as I love an A-10 I think this mission might be better sutied for a faster jet.
I guess the trick is to focus on the ground units only, because planes take longer and you'll run out of missiles faster.
That being said, you should also learn to give up certain battles when you're playing reach the minimum score. Don't get distracted by random dogfights too much and don't circle back when you have only 2-3 targets left in an area because that's a lot of time wasted. The UAVs also count for a large number of points so make sure you have enough time to take out all ten of them.
At the beginning, you can approach the first base from the right side to take out the F16c that are trying to take off. On your return approach, hit the brakes, switch to bombs to hit two targets and then back to missiles to attack one of the bombers while lining yourself up to another bomber to spray it with your cannon. This kind of approach should be what you try to aim for every time you turn into an area with plenty of targets.
Throughout the mission you should prioritize hitting SAMs asap so they don't waste your time by forcing you to evade. You can save your missiles by shooting targets that can't fight back.
The UAVs will appear on the approach to the third base but you're not forced to fight them so you can continue to rack up more points on the easy pickings of the third base and then fight some UAVs once you take out enough targets on the ground. The UAVs should only take one missile each to kill but at very maneuverable so you should only shoot when you're around gun range since you'll have about 20 missiles or less at this point.
So there's a few things to unpack here. First is that you don't need a specific build but a specialized build may make it easier depending on the player. The A-10 is a decent early game plane that can handle the ground attack.
Second you never have to restart a campaign to get MRP. You can farm Free Play at any time to get more so restarting the campaign doesn't benefit you unless you are achievement hunting.
Dropping the truth bombs
Other missions being Pipeline Destruction and Cape Rainy Assault. Others involve too much air combat.
The A-10 flies better than it has any right to in this game but you don't need to it fly well in order to pass the mission. The high hp and good ground attack special weapons lend themselves well to new players who just want to clear the mission and move on.
Later when you are going for score or upping the difficulty pick a plane that can actually dogfight.
The ammo is really nice but that's cancelled out by it being so slow. It takes forever to fly between the bases. Faster planes save so much time that they can afford to go home and take a reload break after the second one, so in the end they have more ammo.
A-10 is a bad trap plane and should be avoided. There are better options.
Oh yeah, A-10 does have a cool gun. I forgot that for a second. That is a point in its advantage and I can't deny that. But new players who are having trouble with Long Day probably suck with guns so I still wouldn't say it's a good choice.
