simple question - upgrading units and xp?
Hey all,

I have been watching a few videos of gameplay and this looks great, nevertheless I have one small question:
Do units gain XP, can you upgrade them in any way (equipment, abalities ...)? and can you of course select them from one battle to the other from your unit roster?

Yes ( if I'm not wrong ! - I've only finished 1 campaign mission + a little skirmish )

But I guess there is probably some devs or people sneaking around to correct me and explane more about it.

Yes, from the 2nd campaign mission onwards

Thanks for answers :)
Could you tell me in what way the upgrade works? How do I choose abilities?
Have not seen this part in any videos I have been watching so far ( quite a few :) )

They do indeed, for every killing blow they will receive the points cost of the unit killed. Once enough XP is gained they will be given either a new ability/wargear/ammo type. Units can level up 3 times and this leads to some interesting combinations, especiallty with leader units that usually start with one or two abilities already! We have 3 companies of the space wolves in game, each led by a unique level 6 commander with access to abilities other units don't receive. Each company is made up of a roster of units that you will get to select to bring to battle, only on very large missions is the whole roster available to pick from. Each commander has his own flavour of units, so you'll find more armour in one, more fast attack in another.

Is there any way to pick what wargear or abilities the units receive when leveling or is it random?
From what I've seen so far it seems random. The ability to choose would be great.

The upgrades seems random. And the unit pools are sometimes different between missions. For instance, in some missions there is no walker unit available, thus you cant pick them in that mission even though youve previously leveled one of those.

Thanks for the answer i thought you could at least choose your abilities. Random abilities is a quite strange design decision...
It was what I was looking for in this type of game. Choosing, constructig, upgrading units before battle.

hope this will change at some point. So I guess for the moment I will wait a little before investing in the game.

This mechanic is unlikely to change as it's a core aspect of the campaign, we wanted to try new ideas and move away from what's been done before. At it's core Sanctus Reach is a wargame, it's about big battles and broad strategy and less so about micro-management. We feel the enjoyment comes from being a good commander and pulling your forces out of sticky situations with the tools you have at your disposal, rather than making the perfect combat force for every situation. The upgrade system was designed to increase player choice during battle and not to cause the player to second guess previous upgrade choices

I agree with Coco. At the minute the game feels more like a collection of random skirmishes rather than a Campaign which you build upon despite carrying over troops as you never know which troops are randomly going to be available and which random abilities they will get. This is a minor gripe in an otherwise great game.

P.S A good commander is capable of pulling his forces out of sticky situations; a Great commander is prepared before hand for those sticky situations.......

Yeah, I came here based on this question.
I didn't lose a single unit on the first mission, they all maxed out for exp for that battle (So level 2 after battle). I clicked on the second mission and not a SINGLE one of the guys are in that pool. Even a new pack leader, I don't get why they made this choice and I am also curious why this game didn't get more of a negative review based on that alone.

You still have those units, it's just that the random unit selection didn't happen to use any units that you chose for the first mission. As you start leveling up more units you'll have more leveled up units available in every mission.
