Its Linear BUT you can look for an "Open World" mod and you get to freeroam with an insane amount of money, dlc cars, all guns, etc.

Never played the old Mafia. Like Godfather and Mob Rule best.

It's great stuff... just get it if you like a mafia movie type game experience.

Think a GTA type thats much more story and mission focused... no real side stuff to do other than rob some stuff and junk cars for money and the like... but there are mods... also the story/mission DLCs offer you more of a free roam type of experience as well.

This game was supposed to be open in Beta, game has many new weapons and after game activities, but at the end they delete it :(

There is an open world there, but nothing to do.. You can explore, but you are not meant to.. It's a linear game for the story's sake and go mission by mission. This is not necessarly a bad thing. The city is there just so you can drive to mission locations and police chases.

The gameplay is open world (with the exception of a few missions), however there's no real 'free mode' - you are always in a mission. There are many cases though where the mission starts up with meeting somebody so you can use those opportunities to act like it's free mode, "explore the city" (there's not much to be honest plus the outskirts are blocked) and get the collectibles.

Story and mission progression is completely linear.

I played 'free roam' mode in mafia 1 alot, would have loved to able to do the same thing in mafia 2. I guess there isn't that much to do in the city to warrant a free mode though.
