L4D Game Won't Start

I recently loaded L4D again after a year or so. Tried to play and it just goes to trying to launch screen and closes.
Things I have tried are:
Verify cache
Uninstall / Reinstall game (3 times)
Open up firewall to Steam
Changed folder permissions to 777 (open)
Changed exe to windows xp compatibility (currently running windows 7 64bit)
Stopped / Started Steam Services

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any addons installed? Or have you ever edited the pak01_dir.vpk file?

It's also possible that you need better video drivers, or the drivers you have are crashing the game to desktop.

When you uninstalled and reinstalled L4D, may I ask how you did that? It makes a difference.

no addons, and never edited the .vpk file.

uninstalled by deleting local content / reloading and via the control panel.

Video drivers are up to date. I have the GTS 450 video card. Was getting bored with bo2 and was really looking forward to playing this game again, always did like it.

Try finding L4D's file on your computer, deleting it, then reinstalling it. L4D crashed every time I tried to load a campaign. No black screen, no error messages, no nothing. Nothing fixed it until I tried completely deleting and reinstalling it.

That did not work either. I opened a ticket with steam yesterday but they have yet to reply to it.

I'm now getting a, Failed to create D3D device, error. Can't post the whole error, it won't let me. I also tried to screen grab it but, my screen grab will not work with the error message open. :(

I found that turning off my anti virus while playing stoped it from crashing..

I fixed it by getting a disk check which proceeded to fix a bunch of corrupt files, and then it started working again after it was done... sorry this advice isn't very straight for ward but i never thought I'd fix it in the first place so i had no hope of the check disk doing anything

I'm having the same problem with left 4 dead I recently bought it and downloaded it but when I try to start up it tells me preparing to launch left 4 dead and just doesn't start

1. verify left4dead game files.
2. reinstall directx 9.0c from microsoft or mirror download from filehippo.com and restart computer after it is done.
3. update gpu driver and restart computer.
4. play left4dead.

Sorry to reply to an old thread but I was having the same issue as the OP. Both L4D and L4D2 would close down immediately after the loading screen.

How I fixed it was to browse to the Steam installation folder on the local drive (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam) and delete the folder "appcache". Everything worked fine afterwards. Hope this helps someone else.
