Because it's different enough from L4D2 to be fun on it's own right. L4D2 is still objectively better.

The atmosphere is better even if the gameplay isn't. You can switch your brain off and play L4D1, not so much 2.

Plus the original maps were balanced with L4D1 in mind. 2 infected kinda break a few setpieces.

I actually prefer the weapon animations in the first game. Especially the M16.

its more of a horror co-op fps than the sequal. The maps are better and players prefer the characters compared to L4D2.

Another type of environment on the maps, the animation of weapons, pistols, better performance, less toxic community, among other things.
also for having started what is left 4 dead itself, the only thing for which I would prefer l4d2 before 1 is for its workshop and way to put mods in the game, which is much easier and more intuitive.

cos its better in every way actually competitive and not some weird ott crap the atmos and director were so cool at the time skeeting hunters feels smooth and playing as them also feels smooth u can also bunny hop as boomer i love this game with a passion l4d2 never quite hit the spot for me as a competitive player
