How do you type in the chat during gameplay?

Usually you would be able to do so pressing enter or y or u depending on the game but I haven't played this in a while. You can always make the characters chat

Press y for chats that you want everyone in-game to see. Press u for team chats only.

I tried the Y & U gimmicks in L4D 1 & 2 to no avail.

But I moved on to L4D 2 and found you can mess with the controls in there and I set the typing to "Tab". Maybe you can do that in 1 as well.......I'm also using a xbox controller, so maybe that messes with the basic controls...I dunno....

I just want to make jokes in between killing a hoard of zombies so the game is less boring.

LoL thank you trains kathy, I figured it out, I just had to go into the settings, there was no instant button I could press right out of the gate.
