Are gonomes canon?
In Half-Life 2, no Gonomes are seen in Ravenholm, despite the fact that the humans there were transformed into zombies a fairly long time before the beginning of the game's events, evident by the fact that Father Grigori had clearly been setting up traps and living alone for a long time.

Then again, most people consider Gearbox's games non-canon.

what i think is that HL1 headcrabs are MUCH diffrent then HL2 headcrabs, for one, hl2 headcrabs can be one shotted by the crowbar, and HL2 headcrabs have the Fast headcrab and the Poison headcrab.

I think that's due to Goldsrc and Source being different, but hell if I know.

Generally, the expansion packs themselves are considered canon by VALVe, but not everything that occures in them is considered canon by VALVe/Marc Laidlaw (Half-Life's story writer).

Race-X and the other creatures aren't considered canon by Laidlaw, but the fact that Black Mesa got nuked by the Black Ops IS canon. Basically everything that VALVe wants to be canon, is canon. Everything they don't want to be canon, is not canon.

here's an E-Mail response from Laidlaw:

entertaining use of the elements of opfor in future games, then we may
well do that, and at that time i guess folks will have a better idea of
where we stand on all this. We can't speak about story ideas outside of
the games themselves--it's meaningless. The games must stand on their
own, contradictions and all. My only hope is to keep unreeling the
story in such a way that it will continue to please the fans and spark
interesting conversations. Thanks for writing!

Thanks.

I like to think that only a few turn into gonomes and those die after a certain time. That's my theory.

Gonomes should be canon. They're awesome in Sven Co-op.

I get that they're a Gearbox creation but Valve could have asked them for permission in using the Gonome in HL2.

So what? Adrian could always one-shot headcrabs with the knife or pipe wrench.
Enderzilla747 Feb 19, 2017 @ 12:46pm
I read a theory that the Combine have genetically altered the Headcrabs. They created the Poison and Fast headcrabs, along with making Headcrabs able to survive in radioactive places. Look closely at the Poison Headcrab legs, they appear to have metal braces around them. Anyways, either the Combine made it so that regular Headcrabs don't morph into Gonomes and Gonarchs, or the suppression field also stops them aswell. Or they're not canon at all...
Cat Feb 19, 2017 @ 2:19pm
If they are canon, maybe the combine did alter the headcrab breeds. They can just remove the headcrab's organs/genes/whatever that makes them possible to evolve into gonomes after controlling a host. Obviously, they did not want to deal with gonomes, it will be like a combination of all 3 HL2 zombies in one body if gonomes appear in HL2. Imagine if a zombine evolves into a gonome.

Or, maybe it was just black mesa that altered the headcrabs or the zombies - by accident. That place has a lot of radiation and mutagens that mutates the zombies further into gonomes.

Personally I think that a hot environment is needed for their mutaion. Think about this, the first one that you find is placed in the vent system with all those fires to keep the instalation temperature. Ravenholm is a cold place.

I can see that.

"Zombines" as Alyx calls them are kinda like Gonomes but instead of hurling gunk at you they run at you with a grenade.
Doc Tear Popper Feb 28, 2018 @ 5:48pm
Gonomes will always be the best type of zombie to me. The Fast Zombies can suck it.
