Later chapters extremely difficult (not a moment of respite)

The OG Half Life had moments between fights even in the later chapters. This game just bombards you constantly forcing you to use up all your ammo and tanking your health in the process. I really am trying to enjoy it but the dozens times I have to reload and quicksave make it a terrible experience. Great game for masochists though, if you wanna feel rage then play this.

Back then it was common for expansions to be tailored for people who completed the base game and as such be harder than the hardest parts of the original.

Not wrong, but I found the Half Life 2 episodes to be fairly easy.

The HL2 episodes were more like standalone sequels than big box expansions, though.

The worst part has to be the battle with a ♥♥♥♥ ton of shock troopers right after the Voltigore sewer. The game only gives you a single medkit to proceed.

I've been pushing through the game with the help of SV_Cheats.
I am not ashamed to spam health packs if I am dying.

Put the game in easy, you can modify the difficulty by tiping skill in the console
So you press ² to make the console show up and write :
Skill 1
To put the game in easy. (2 is medium 3 is hard)
No shame in that, for me even on hard I consider the game pretty easy but I've played those kind of games for 20 years so don't be ashamed to lower it if you don't have the greatest aim/strategy/reflexes/knownledge.. just put it in easy and have fun

On a qwerty keyboard, I think the default is " ` " or " ~ ".

I still have difficulty on easy in the final few chapters. (It might just be a skill issue though)

I just saved all the time, and if I didn’t like how the fight turned out, I just reload. Got me through the whole game on hard mode.

It gives you a medic too. Use him.

HL2 in general is a much easier game. The game constantly rewards you with supply crates and they are programmed to give you health and armor if you are struggling.
