This species didn't appear until Shephard woke up. Only Freeman technically could have seen one of this new creatures before entering Lambda but just happened that he didn't. But is not that hard to belive since only some hours passed since this new specie started to move around.
Take this like an example Freeman didn't see Controllers until opening the portal or other xenoterical species. And Barney, Collete and Gina didn't see all the species neither. However when looking at the whole story as a whole thing is ironic that a chumtoad was placed in the vent very close to Freeman when he jumped to Xen. So from that point of view he passed close to one of these new creatures without knowing it. I will not have in consideration Barney's pet.... as a canon. I think that is more like a joke... who could waste ammo to open a box that in reality you could open with your hands.
What is true is that Marc Laidlaw didn't had nothing to do with this Gearbox Invention and he only introduced the athomic bomb at the end of the game.
And is true that if VALVe want to say something that will be impossible when having in mind Oppossing force they will make it. So the game is canon but it will not avoid VALVe from doing whatever they want in the future.
That's true but is evident that Gearbox entered these creatures as part of the X Race. Because when Barney found them on Xen they teleport using pink portals, something that you only see with creatures from X race.
In a side note I would like to pointing out that the final boss for Opposing Force is chockingly similar to the tentacles from Half-Life and is amaizing to notice the same pink colour in these tentacles at Alyx game.
Maybe is VALVe trying to pointing out that these tentacles came from X race world. If this obersvation is correct Freeman really saw a X race creature.
Rememeber that no creature is from xen, they live there because they got trapped there from their own homeworlds.
And I don't see any problem imaging VALVe creating this kind of details giving the whole games they already gave to the public. One thing is that VALVe created tentacles without thinking in X race other that we have now race x and they can implement it in their universe.
Other details that nobody saw that remembers Half Life Decay is Eli's vance laboratory
where the light is divided in the 3 main colours from Decay Orange Violet and Green.
In alyx the thing that gives you those alien granades use the pink light as well and I always think on Opposing force alien granades. I can't think about that as a simple coincidence.
Because it's not canon.

It's evident that I wasted my time on you but I will repeat that Barney saw Chumtoads on Xen.
If you don't want to think by yourself even with other's help I will make one question to you Why Freeman, Gina and Collette and Calhoun and Shephard didn't see AntLions?
If you pretend that you are proving a ♥♥♥♥ pointing out theoretical nonsenses inside a fictional story that since day one was growing up little by little is your problem not mine.
They just didn't see those species during their adventures. That easy. And for me is prefectly possible and logical.
And has sense when considering the timeline of the whole games together. If you think that is just because lucky... stop playing Half-Life because you are not appreciating all the work made VALVe and Gearbox to make things logic an possible in a fictional enviorement.
