Can't Equip Displacer Cannon. (Possibly resolved - Untested)

As stated, I can't equip the Displacer Cannon....at all, I can equip other guns, but not that one. When I picked it up it was equiped but I couldn't use it. However now I can't complete the game as I need to use the alt fire on the gun....

As stated below in a reply (added on 28/06/2018):

I've done some research and found why I may not be able to install both Opposing Force and Blue shift. Apparently the games require Half-Life to be installed in order to play, this is odd as I used to play them fine without Half-Life, although I had Half-Life: Source. Thus I am buying the original Half Life and installing it to see if this will solve my problem. Might be worth looking into, if nothing else it may fix the issue of not being able to install the games!

I can confirm, not having the ORIGINAL Half-Life installed was the issue, I assume due to some change you need the original game installed, because I did not have it, it made the cannon not function as it probably needed something from the original game, I hope this helps people.

I've resolved the issue not installing the game, as for the cannon I'm not sure and cannot test this easily, you'll have to play and hope for the best.

EDIT 02/12/2019: This is a bit of an old thread and I don't know how accurate or useful the posts here are, I haven't played the game in ages, nor tested the fixes... I also have a new computer so it is possible I'll never see the bug and thus I cannot help in a useful manner!

Addendum: This thread is several years old now, please do not revive this one and instead make your own thread before commenting here as the advice here may be outdated and not work due to updates and the like.

Does it have ammo? The weapon equiping code has some quirks I think.

It has full ammo, although when I first picked the weapon up the ammo counter didn't display the right ammo, it displayed the weapon I used before, even when it was equiped a tthat point I still couldn't use it at all.

I did verify the game and that found 73 missing files but none of them fixed this issue.

I'm sorry I didn't. I actually gave up in the end. However, try validating the game as I did above. If that fails uninstall the game and reinstall it. Be aware if you want to keep your saved games. Follow this:

Right click Half Life Opposing Force - click properties - local files - click browse local files.
Double click the folder named gearbox. This is the folder Opposing force is installed in. Then there is a folder called SAVE, within this are ALL of your saves. Copy the file to a different location, like you documents, just so you have a backup incase uninstalling removes all the saved games. Once it's reinstalled run the game and see if you have saved games, if not, follow the first 2 lines of this paragraph and copy and paste the SAVE folder back, that should bring you your saved games. After that try to eqiup the displacer cannon. If it doesn't work then, then try reloading the level, I.E (if possilbe, I can't remember) restart the chapter, the chapter screeen you should get when you start a new game, like you get with HL2. Why? If the issue is with the save then loading the game this way might fix it or something. I never tried this as I didn't think of it until later on!

I'm sorry but there isn't really anything else I can think of or suggest. If reinstalling isn't an option for you then try the rest of it with loading the chapter. If you have questions, ask away :).

I just tried running the game myself. Ignore the chapter thing, you can't select it.

I loaded my save game and 1: I can't select the gun and 2: I have HUGE issues with looking in a different direction, I have several issues apparently! Can't really help you though....I'll post here if I figure something out.

Gotta a problem. I can't reinstall Opposing force now. I just get an error saying that the content is encrypted. I got no idea how to fix this, nor how it happened. Hope you don't have this issue. I'd be aware of this before uninstalling it if you haven't already.

Actually I can't install it as uninstalling Opposing Force cause Half life source to vanish.... *facepalm*

Yeah, I'm giving up on this, I can't even install the game now XD. I think there is something broken or it's not 100% compatible with todays technology. If so, I can't do anything about it! I keep getting an error saying that it's still encrypted. Hope you have better luck!

Sure it's not your PC or OS acting up? Stating that the game is "apparently" not compatible with todays tech when others like myself are having no problems whatsoever strikes me as a bit disingenuous .

I had this issue long before this computer. You may have no issues, but then again your computers hard ware is probably different than mine, I have no idea what the issue is but I was just giving an educated guess, it's an old game. A game may work for one person and not work at all for another. Initially I couldn't equip the weapon, now I can't even install the game.

I've also reinstalled the OS before hand on this computer and got the same problems.

I have another issue where games don't download properly through steam, it downloads part of it and I have to keep validating it in order for it to download the rest. Again, no idea what to do, I've tried pretty much everything and I still have this issue, thus I just deal with it. That's a different issue altogether but the issue with Opposing Force could be absolutely anything, I'm not wasting anymore time fixing this.

I'm not being disingenuous, I'm saying what I think, it may be wrong, it may be right, doesn't mean I'm trying to mislead people, it's just my understanding and knowledge on the topic.

Ammo wasn't the problem, restarting the map isn't possible as you can't select individual levels in the game, loading a previous save didn't work either. Verifying game files didn't work either.

Regardless, I can't even install the game anymore and have no idea how to resolve any of these issues, I'm not that fussed as I've finished it in the past.
