Strategies?
Although I'm a total noob at MKW, I'm pretty good at most war games (Total War games, Rise of Nations, etc.). I've tried the English campaign twice and failed miserably both times.

1. What are you supposed to do at the beginning? The text said to conquer nearby hamlets & towns, so I tried to conquer Lewes -- was thoroughly defeated.

2. Conquering Lewes: There were no city walls or gates so I disbanded the beginning battering rams & ladders. The enemy had only militia & hunters, but they seemed to be unbeatable with my level-3 macemen, bills & archers which were about equal in numbers to the enemy.

3. I tried destroying their houses & industrial buildings, thinking that would eventually run them out of resources & make it hard to replenish their army losses. They still beat me.

Thanks! I managed to defeat Maidenstone with little trouble.

I won Lewes in the "Cossacks way"... After building a mixed army of swordsman and archers and the simple cavalry (forgot the name) I was always wiped out by their archer "superiority". Then I did it like the AI and spammed archers and literally grinded myself through the enemy ranks, only pushing my troops forward inch by inch. My killed archers I replaced at once and had a nice "supply line" of archers moving to the frontline. This is what I meant with "Cossacks way"... ;-)

The only thing what stopped me from total archer domination ;-) was the unit cap, if there is one. Couldn`t have more than 30 units altogether which seems to be rather low for such massive battles. Don`t know, if this will be higher somewhen? (maybe through tech research?)

try and build up a steady economy in Dover first. This way you can recruit units for your army.
Keep in mind that the strenght of your army should be larger than the town's army you want to capture. Upgraded units give a stronger army even if the number of units is smaller than the enemy's army. Upgraded units have a number on the lower right hand side of the unit icon.
Hope this info helps :)

I just upgraded stuff in town, too scared to venture out and eventually I got a light attack.

what you do is building up you beginners town or towns that includes lvling them then make an army as high as you can to start off with and auto resolve fight hamlet or what eva they called with a attack of bout 61

I took Lewes right off by building a 100 strength army and manually fought the battle. Simple as pie. Dont auto resolve as it is easier to go for their base.

Great to see a first proper strategy discussion. And understandable it`s hard for the new players. Really can`t wait to start working on some start-up quests that would help new players get into it and learn the best way to capture Hamlets.

Thanks Konstantin - I've managed to overcome the worst noob blunders by now. I did what Tredlam recommended -- built up Dover to max 5-level archers & infantry + stone walls all around. Then ventured out and took a few of the weeker hamlets, and finally one walled town (Bristol, I think). I now have what is (at this stage) a fairly unbeatable army of about 16 longbows, 4 macemen, 1 battering ram, 1 monk, and various serfs, horse carts, pigs, etc. I've even managed to get a few techs.

Still don't know what the symbols mean when you mouse-over or left-click a unit. I've figured out health, but really don't know how to read the symbology. Maybe that's covered in the tutorial now?

LOL, I gues this is the evil one's way of saying "whatever advice I give you will be outdated after a few more patches".

But it looks like you have found your way into the game nicely now. :steamhappy:

As for those symbols: blue is the stamina bar, there is attack strength (the sword), speed (the boot), defence against cutting, crushing and piercing attacks and for arches, there is also range.

Thanks much! I think it'll all come to me eventually. I did figure out green bar = health; blue bar = stamina ('cause my monk uses it to heal); boots = speed. Doesn't really matter, though, does it? Either you hit things in the head & they die or they don't and you die instead.

Just took another walled city; Chester, I think. It was a fairly tough fight, especially since they had trebuchets just inside the inner wall protecting their town hall. Went through a couple of battering rams and about all my infantry before the trebuchets were finally killed.
