Before you take the last king's land make sure you have the highest renown in your kingdom. After the king's death a new king will be elected by the highest renown. For now the hire new lord feature is not yet launched by the dev so if you kill all the lords when you take the throne you will become a King with no lord lol.
Btw, it’s the highest renown not standing right. And I heard if you attack you own nation the king will announce you rebel, does that make other lord in nation attack you?
Not that it served much to him, only 2 lords remained, and my armies were closing in on the capital
