Bit sad, as I really enjoy mods for just about any game. Also extends the life of a game massively.
Hm. this would extend the lifetime of this game indefinitely. Big mods could even be officially approved and monetized. (yay steam!)
Definitely look into this option.
Also, while I appreciate your enthusiasm for modding and I do agree that mod support is a good thing for pretty much all games(and I definitely wouldn't be opposed if all non-competitive-multiplayer games were built from the ground up with mod support in mind), saying devs don't improve games is just...ridiculous. Communities make games successful, there's no doubt about that, and mods can make games even better than the devs left it...but devs make the game, period. And often they keep adding improvements and new features to games long after the game launches; sometimes they even take mods and make them official content. Devs aren't somehow less important to improving a game than modders are, unless you're Bethesda.
(I'm sorry, I kid, but I couldn't resist.)
