Survivors can aquire a trait if you have them with you and they start talking. Well, technically it was there the whole time, but was hidden and inactive...I believe. Mosty of the traits you can get this way do nothing, but there are a few that effect morale and I never saw the morale effect listed until the trait was revealed.
