Returning player: have they "fixed" multiplayer now?
Are we still limited to being around the host player? Or can all players now roam around the map freely?

The "tethering" to host player is intentional and done because some people wanted cross platform play. The devs put in tethering because consoles cant handle it.

Things like this is why I dont like the cross platform feature in games.

I'm not as passionate as I sound I swear lol.

The answer is unfortunately no and it's because there is nothing to fix.

If we want better in sod 3 then we lose cross platform play

Other cross platform games don't have this "feature". So I disagree with your statement that consoles can't handle it.

Yeah it's just the engine really, I came here to see if they had "fixed" this, but looks like the answer will always be no. Shame.

Well, Xbox Series X could easily handle it, but Xbox One couldn't. So they could now patch it in, but I guess the game still needs to be supported on Xbox One so eh.

But yeah, it seems like a pretty fundamental engine thing, so it's probably not easily changed either way.

Hopefully SoD3 will have completely free roaming.

So it doesnt say consoled cant handle it but tethering was done for perfomance
Here is the article.
https://goblinsandghouls.com/how-does-state-of-decay-2-multiplayer-work/

Here is a quote

PLAYER TETHERING
The most significant downside to State of Decay 2 multiplayer is player tethering. Despite this massive open-world at your disposal, co-op players cannot venture far from the host. If you do walk or drive too far, you’ll teleport back to the main player.

Undead Labs implemented player tethering to increase performance online. The game’s world is quite large, and allowing the entire map to load at once could lead to game crashes and lag.

I get it but like I said, there is nothing to fix. Tethering will not be removed
