Getting the character you want?
Hi everyone. I'm new to the game. I've been playing around with it a bit seeing how the game generates characters. I'm the sort of gamer who finds it important to play a character they like. I know you don't just play one character in this game, but I'd kind of like a main one to focus on.

None of the presets you start out with really appeal to me. I thought the soldier on the roof in the tutorial might be good but aside from her voice everything seems to be random. Is it always completely random or does the game cycle through a few presets? One I thought looked good and with a cool handle but I hadn't learned how the game handles saving and I quit and lost her.

Any tips that might help?

Note, I know this might sound a little weird. Cheers though.

Wait till this gets an update:

https://www.nexusmods.com/stateofdecay2/mods/45

The author is currently recovering from gall bladder removal surgery, and the mod stopped working after the newest patch.

The community editor allows you to switch between male and female, select a character model, voice, skills, traits, quirks, everything.

The characters in the tutorial are also a bit randomized. But with more rules. Must be a doctor, must be a soldier, but their look, sex, name, traits etc randomize a bit.

My suggestion is get to providence ridge starter base, do those missions until you get to the next base. From there thats pretty much the end of the tutorial missions. You youll have done everything they should you.

From there yiu can just start a new community and roll random characters

oh and the game doesnt save until you leave the camp and enter the providence ridge map

Its not that kind of game, you should not attach yourself to any of the characters cause they wont live forever the game is focused around loosing characters especially on harder difficulties it teaches you that life goes on in the community and that you have to replace characters with new ones, The sooner you accept that then it will be easier to just accept the character the way they are

Sorry, but some of us do get attached to the characters. For us it is always that kind of game. We cannot help it.

They should have allowed the player to create at least 1 character. Even when you start a game after the tutorial its a pain to keep rolling your characters until you get ones you like.

another type of cheesy tip :
start a new game
pick 3 people by their traits
start the game... at the very very beginning even you go for starting base you can see their hero bonus! if you like it send to legacy pool and than call from your main community.

Thanks for all the replies. I would use the community editor but I'm on Xbox.

I agree a simple character creator or editor would be ideal, even if it was just for cosmetic features like face, voice and name. I can understand they don't want you to cheese so I'd be happy for traits and skills to be random. I just want to look cool when I'm running around surviving.

If you beat tutorial with preset crew you can start new game and roll for new randomized characters.

just use the mod, you are on PC, there is a mod to edit your community completely.
I have my entire team full of red talon minus the idiotic debuff. I have 2 toons that look pretty and have good stats, like a guy that looks like James from Silent Hill 2 with Immortal trait and a cute female. And then I gave them Red Talon skilltrees too, tho there are a few fighting skilltrees that are better, like edge weapons or the close combat I think where you can unarmmed 1 shot anyone

I mean it IS that kind of game if you're not playing on the brokenly hard difficulties. You're expected to set up one of them as your group leader, for starters, and pursue their missions as them.

The important point to make here is that you manage a whole community, not just a character. There are no main characters even though you start with three that you rolled a long time to get.

While the game is designed around permadeath and autosave so you run the risk of losing characters, I very rarely lose characters these days. It is very avoidable even on Lethal, once you learn that you are not supposed to stand and fight to kill all zombies attacking you, to the death. If it looks like you might get overwhelmed or have to use lots of resources to kill Juggernauts and Ferals, you should instead just get out of there in your car.

Live to fight another day!

Learning when to run is the most important skill in the game.

Any random blood plague survivor qualifies as a character I want.
A Hygienist Blood Plague survivor... if that's not asking for too much.

The Community Editor mod got updated. The author has recovered from his surgery,

Now you can fully edit your community again.
