Like, when cars explode they can be returned to and repaired vs being gone forever. They also have fuel now.
If you plan on playing for a while, I'd do a Define Your Legacy run first, then Heartland. Then go back Define Your Legacy and mix in Daybreak (it's a separate mode that can earn prestige points to use during runs of the main game for extra stuff.
Heartland - Most like the Main Game in SOD1 (Story and Characters, same place)
Daylight - Lifeline like Siege with Waves.
Heartland expands on the overall story so you "should" wait until after playing the campaign at least once.
I would suggest playing a campaign first on one of the more forgiving modes and then trying Heartland before switching to lethal or even nightmare.
Daybreak is of course entirely different. I did not enjoy the mode and only played it to unlock all the CLEO stuff, but to each their own.
That is however not mandatory unless you want to follow the story line in chronological order.
