Came back recently (on exact same machine, no hardware changes) and I'm crashing like once an hour. It's always a soft crash (game just freezes, machine is fine and I can alt-tab etc -- have to kill the task). Sometimes it's while in a menu, sometimes it's after getting in a car, sometimes it's while searching a container, sometimes just walking around. It's totally random.
CPU and GFX temps never exceed ~72C.
\AppData\Local\StateOfDecay2\Saved\Logs is full of crash reports.
I checked a few games and there are a few fixes seemingly depending on game engine.
As UE4 and UE5 failed on me, I searched high and low for a solution and found something that worked for me specifically for UE4/5 games which was increasing the Virtual Memory paging pool.
Raising the paging pool at the recommended Microsoft suggestion of x1.5 the size of installed GB of RAM. (VMEM = x1.5 RAM size)
Since doing so, Unreal Engine and it's games run without fault.
My hardware is AMD Ryzen 7 1800x using a Nvidia GTX 1080Ti with 32GB RAM @ 3200Mhz.
If you would like to try raising the paging pool, first make sure you have the proper disk space available and follow these directions below:
Windows Key + R
Copy/paste: SystemPropertiesAdvanced
Advanced tab < Performance section < Settings... < Advanced tab < Virtual Memory section < Change...
Go to the drive where the game is installed on and click "Custom Size" (Uncheck "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives - if applicable).
Set "Initial size" to the MS recommended size as stated and increase the Maximum size no less than x1.5 but no more than x2.5 times the true RAM size amount (I found x1.5 times the best as MS recommends).
Click okay and restart the PC. If all goes well the crashing should stop.
Also, Apple Bonjour has issues.
Any backup app can cause an issue when/if backing up C drive in real-time.
Then again I did just come having over 100+ daily errors because of a janky Windows Update, now down to 3 - 4 redundant errors daily.
But I found quite a few flaws and if you have a Windows build, upon build, upon build, that very well can complicate things especially if you have had the builds before 2021 major update.
Plus, if you use AMD Adrenaline, that too can cause an issue and Intel users are no different. The real problem is that everyone has different fixes and it's hard when you are all just complaining and not looking for answers.
It is NOT the game...
Nvidia drivers are causing issues. How about trying to force Vulkan?
I had games crash recently due to OneDrive and Real-time Protection backup applications...
Seemingly there is also an issue with AIDA64 some type of monitoring program that can install with other software in bloat.
