So far as i'm concerned only thing their good for is Z distraction.
AI is terrible at retreating from a fight, not very good at fighting hostile humans and can´t make use of consumables and throwables.
So on day to day looting and fighting operations they are nice to have around, just think twice about bringing them to high-risk operations, because that is likely to kill them.
They are never detrimental to have though.
Biggest issue is their lack of self-preservation when things go south and you want to get the hell out. Worst thing you can do is try to save them. They'll get killed, you'll get killed, everyone will be sad.
Best thing you can do when they charge into certain death is to run away as fast as possible. If you have a car, get in and drive. Don't wait for your helper, don't even look their way, just go go go.
See, the game only tracks what's happening around you. If you can distance yourself from your helpers suicide attempt, it won't even happen. Get far far away then open your map and you'll see that your helper is is running back to you, complaining that you should slow down.
I'd love to see better AI, but I don't think that will happen in SoD 2, sadly.
