You might find them at a plague heart or in a horde.
They do despawn but once that happens the game will autodeposit the inventory into your base inventory.
Honestly the mechanism isnt well defined. And heck it might have changed with this latest update.
- Make everyone wear costumes that are clearly "I'm not a zombie!" It'll be easier to find them later.
When they die:
- Get zombied (plague death): They will wander, depending on how long you ignore them. The game keeps track of them somehow, and can just reintroduce them to the map at some future point. Not always near where they got zombified.
- Juggie rip: Die at the scene. Body will be mostly there, and over there, so it's easier to figure out where the stuff ended up.
- Explody or Fire death (and/or human killed you): same as juggie death, but with less parts to find.
So, if you stayed in the session, you lose track of the zombified ones. But you will have to purposely go back and collect things from the corpse for the other types. Corpses aren't nice enough to restock their gear, generally.
Also, due to Juggie rip and/or explody bits, the body might end up in hard to access locations. So the mini map will show a location, but there won't be anything searchable there. (or it's under the map) I think in this case, log out to get access again.
If you quit out, then the next time you log in you may get the restock option when you get close to the corpse. It happens some times, though it may be more due to 'quest progress gets reset' sort of mechanics. Other times just follow the icon of the grave to find the body.
Your zombified friends will effectively be a randomly dropped in item (this part is literal if you've watched the horde fountains). The good news is if you kill it, you get an auto-restock of the items, so they're usually fair game for drive-bys. Which is actually how I've found out that the zombie survivors are kept by the game, as I've randomly run over a zombie and got the notification about the restock.
I feel like the long line of graves at the back of the community screen might give a clue on if you've found them or not, but haven't looked into that part. Kinda wish you could select the graves to see their stats still.
i am not 100% when and how it happend but in my case the stuff was deposied back in my stock, since i only have 1 mp40 its clear
