When sending someone to Legacy do they leave?
I know the basic gist of the benefit - send them to legacy, and then you can radio them to your group in another game... but when sending someone to Legacy do they leave your current game?

I think you add them to the pool until they die or get sent away.

I don't want to send my best one to the pool, and lose them in this game...
Asked the same question about a 1 week ago. So yes if you send someone to the legacy pool they do leave your current community. You can also pay influence to get them back or you can make a new community and have them be in the new group for no influence.

You can bring back your character to that community also whenever you want if you have enough influence so long as you're not at the soft limit of 9 characters.
So they do leave... but you can request them back (using the legacy radio system), I assume they are then no longer in the pool and if I want them in another community in the future, I need to send them back to the legacy? The best thing to do is... beat the game, then send to legacy for the next round?

Exactly. They will leave your current community and will be in the legacy pool and when you take them out of the legacy pool they are no longer in the legacy pool. Be careful cause if that character dies its the end of them.

You can send any character to the legacy pool at any time after the intro and getting your first base. At the end of your leaders legacy missions you can continue with that community or choose who to send in the legacy pool and either continue with the community and keeping all your loot and resources or disband and it and lose it all.

Personally I dont see any reason to disband your first community if you've farmed a ton of stuff. You can do a lot with it, for example.

You can transfer 1 legacy character with a ton of stuff like guns or other loot to another new community and repeat the process by going back to your old community and sending them back to the new community, so long as you dont disband any community.

The reason to do this is cause I'm noticing loot is nearly all scavenged on the highest difficulty. Its worth transferring a character with loot to a community on lethal if you're having a hard time finding weapons.

Also I'm not sure if you get anything for doing the legacy missions for all your characters. I know theres only 4 types of leaders, Sheriff, builder, trader and warlord. Beating the map with each of those types of leaders will give you special effects that this game calls legacy boons when you start a new community but not for the current one for some reason.

One more thing, I dont know whats the max legacy characters you can have on one map but I know for sure you can choose 3 when starting a new community and map.
you can fill your complete community with legacy pool inhabitants, it dont matters for teh game. the pool itself can contain 50 chars max.
