You can bring back your character to that community also whenever you want if you have enough influence so long as you're not at the soft limit of 9 characters.
You can send any character to the legacy pool at any time after the intro and getting your first base. At the end of your leaders legacy missions you can continue with that community or choose who to send in the legacy pool and either continue with the community and keeping all your loot and resources or disband and it and lose it all.
Personally I dont see any reason to disband your first community if you've farmed a ton of stuff. You can do a lot with it, for example.
You can transfer 1 legacy character with a ton of stuff like guns or other loot to another new community and repeat the process by going back to your old community and sending them back to the new community, so long as you dont disband any community.
The reason to do this is cause I'm noticing loot is nearly all scavenged on the highest difficulty. Its worth transferring a character with loot to a community on lethal if you're having a hard time finding weapons.
Also I'm not sure if you get anything for doing the legacy missions for all your characters. I know theres only 4 types of leaders, Sheriff, builder, trader and warlord. Beating the map with each of those types of leaders will give you special effects that this game calls legacy boons when you start a new community but not for the current one for some reason.
One more thing, I dont know whats the max legacy characters you can have on one map but I know for sure you can choose 3 when starting a new community and map.
