Also it depends what you need.
I always do a computer expert as I can't find those textbooks or survivors anywhere. So the two I have now are the ones that will continue each campaign/map,
But I am also trying to complete all different leader types to get the boons for the legacy.
I would also hover over their standing in the community section of the menu and see what "hero" status they have.
The best ones are the 25% eat less food hero perk. Makes surviving so much easier out there on harder difficulties (I am only on dread though).
But yeah, overall look at their character sheet more than their 5th skill as you can always use a consumable to recycle your 5th skill.
I have a member who is 'Meal Plan' so I added 'Fishing' as a 5th skill, food perks all round being the idea.
2nd pick: Munitions*, Electronics*, Plumbing
3rd pick: Metalwork, Cuisine
*Given the usefulness of C4, especially on lower difficulties, maybe replace Programming for these two.
But to me it is different, because I start with 3 Quirk skills:
Lichenology, Scrum Certification, Hygiene.
Then I know I will go to 12 survivors, so the next six will be the following: Pathology, Pharmacology, Automechanics, Programming, Nutrition, *blank. Then I hope that the Soldier/alcoholics trio will give me Chemistry and two empty 5th skills. If so, the three open 5th skill slots will be Sleep Psychology, Metalwork and Plumbing. If I already have a +2 beds Hero Bonus, Sleep Psychology can be swapped for Electronics I guess.
So yes, I can manage fine with the Lichenologist, as having an Agriculture expert only means +2,5 Food per day compared to Gardening, so he/she basically just pays for him/herself.
Short answer to the OP: there is no "best" 5th skill. It depends entirely on what you are going to produce, and on what you already have in your community.
I also like Soundproofing a lot but I would not recommend it to everyone,
especially with future changes to noise/siege system.
And you can't retrain fifth skill so choose wisely :-)
do not choose something like mechanic, craft, fishing or skills that dont give a bonus for you to go out...
well at least IMO!
If i have to choose some for lethal i would say gardening is one of the most importants as well as Automechanics and computer/electronics.
