2. Sadly no, Daybreak unlock items and prestige points can only be earned through playing the Daybreak mode.
3. You get some points even if you fail after the first wave, or maybe even during the first wave, don't know anymore
But you only get the specific Daybreak item unlocks after you clear Wave 3, Wave 5 and/or Wave 7 (Final Wave).

It's even easier now, since ammo stack sizes have been increased (especially for the CLEO ammo)

Also an add on question: If I did have other players in Daybreak (I believe it's up to 4, so be 3 and me) will the NPCs still spawn in too?

No, the NPCs only fill out the empty player slots. But I believe you can only have up to 2 NPC partners. So if you play with 2 other players (3 players in total) you won't get any NPC buddies. But if there ar 2 total players you get 1 NPC
