I think once that skill is maxed it should be silent while standing and attacking. Even if just the execution move was silent it would be a big boost.
An aggressive zombie's double hand swipe is much faster than a human's close combat attack. So much so that if you see a zombie running at you, you are better off clicking to initiatie a swipe of thin air, so that the weapon is at least ready when the zombie has reached you and you click again. Otherwise, you'll get damaged, maybe some Blood Plague, and staggered as well.
It is as slow to draw and strike with as a 25-pound mallet is. If not slower.
The Close Combat draw should be the fastest by far of the different weapon types. It should be as if you never holstered it.
Though they don't have active stats, they also don't have durability, and once maxed out, they are basically instant kills.
Acrobat works well for rolls to get behind etc. High skill high reward for not just running straight at hordes. A.I. sucks though.
There is no reason to ever swing your close combat weapon, thats why it doesnt need damage.
Although I´ve killed all the plague hearts with the knives because its free - no durability loss, no bullets or resources wasted and no noise. I think a lethal heart takes about 90-100 hits to die.
FML.
The way I usually play Close Combat, is to dodge behind the first zombie, grab him, and push him into the horde to knock down as many as I can. Then run in and chain the extremely quick ground executes that knives have. I don't really use the frontal execute if there are more than 5 coming at me unless they're spaced out.
Likewise with Heavy Weapons, you can knock down a handful of zombies in one swing and there are few things in this game more cathartic than knocking a Plague Feral around with a Heavy Weapon. Also, one of the ground executes for Heavy Weapons has you swing the weapon around before the head smash, which not only keeps you from being interrupted, but it also knocks more zombies down to be executed. So while you're executing one, you're also knocking down one or two more, then you execute one of them and knock down one or two more, etc.
I would say they are all useful but require different methods to be successful, though Close Combats basic melee strikes need to be a little faster. As far as stats on CC weapons, maybe thats where the speed could come from. CC weapons could vary from each other in Lethality and Speed, maybe give some small universal things like slightly increased Stamina Regen, or slightly increased movement speed while crouched or something. All specs carry a CC weapon so small universal buffs might be pretty fun.
