Construction and Metalworking skill effects are mixed up
Construction says you can craft materials from parts but it only lets you craft parts from materials

Am I just not able to find where I can build materials cause I have played this game for years and not once have I seen the option after getting someone who had construction

I'm pretty sure actually creating Materials resource from parts requires Metalworking.

Too bad construction itself says "Enables the creation of materials from parts" and Metalworking says "Allows you to scrap materials for parts". These descriptions have been backwards since launch and I just recently decided to have a construction character again to see if they fixed it; they have not

Actually, I may have misspoken, because I was thinking where Metalworking gets done. (And I hardly ever build one, because Materials is the easiest resource to find in the game, and the only weapon I like from it is Rebar Blade, which can be purchased). Have you built a Forge? That converts parts TO materials WITH Knowledge of Construction.

So that's what it was; me guess I just missed it cause the forge says it uses metalworking and I have never ever used it in Lethal, Nightmare, or lower. I usually just use materials for Vehicle upgrade kits (on runs where I upgrade vehicles) and then just forget materials exist

The only way I would consider having a Craftsmanship character among the full roster of 12 survivors is if Construction eliminated Materials cost passively and Metalworking unlocked (for production) ALL weapons and attachments in the game by reverse engineering (scrapping) weapons/attachments while having a Forge.

Then I might even consider having both. And a Forge.

As it is now, they are both providing nothing worthwhile considering that there is a hard limit to the number of survivors.

I only grabbed someone with it cause I just needed a builder leader to beat lethal with now that I moved to PC (and chose to) start fresh, I remember it being pretty useless but felt like trying someone with it again now that a few updates have come out since I last looked at the skill, but it is actual garbage still

That and the Container Fort went from most sustainable and one of the most powerful bases in the game to absolutely broken (from a 100+ day in one map perspective) after they buffed outposts and made it so all of Cascade hills gets a staging area in its landmark outpost, with and without builder boon now outposts can cover all resource costs in cascade hills leaving the fort a base giving 2 Large Slot (8 free beds with no cost, 4 free watchtower guards with no ammo cost, +10 all resources) bonuses at 0 Cost and no slot consumption in a map that gives every base a Large Slot Outpost in its Landmark, with two Free Large Slots to spend as you will and 4 free Small Slots to spend as you will (cause 1 Infirmary and 1 Workshop). Buffing the outposts turned container fort into a monster. Yeah it made Nightmare and Lethal simpler to survive in (Container fort did not need it to reach 100% sustainability but other 3,500/8 person bases could not reach 100% sustainability before the buff) but it turned the most sustainable base into a base where every slot that appears in its base menu is a free slot for whatever you want, unlike every other base in the game where at least 1-2 Large Slots and 3-5 Small Slots (depending on the base) are still forced to be spent on sustainability unless you want to always do supply runs or give up outpost sustainability for bed outposts/give up base slots for more beds.

I felt like mentioning that cause who thought it was okay to buff outposts without checking how strong that made some bases (My favorite base since launch yes, but it still is dumb) while there are multiple skills and playstyles in the game that just aren't good

I use one for part of my playthrough since it is required to build some items and top-level Storage. As for keeping long term after that, yes I agree, not necessary.
