Another crash another corrupted save file ( UPDATED)
For the second time in less than a month my game has crashed and corrupted my save file. the first time i lost a 329 hour save. i have reinstalled the game at least 3 times now and verified the integrity of files each time with not issues. i contacted undead lab support only received one email telling me to reinstall the game and they never followed up after i emailed back it did not work.it is beyond flustering that this is happening this often and i cannot use cloud saves as they are overwritten and go from a few hundred MB to a few hundred KB.

Create backup save (copy "\Users\user\AppData\Local\StateOfDecay2" folder).

Saves are normally around 1 MB.

If you have few hundreds MB rest of that data are crash reports/logs.

I delete from time to time files and folders from "Saved\Logs" folder or
XXXX.CrashContext.json or similar crash related files from
"\AppData\Local\StateOfDecay2\Saved folder".

that sounds like a lot of crashlogs to reach 100s of MBs or extremely bloated saves?

I will look into it but tough starting over a 3rd time with over 430 hous of playtime invested with nothing to show for it again.

type %localappdata% in the windows taskbar. press enter. cut and paste the stateofdecay2 folder to the desktop.

Try running the game. that filder should repopulate.

Are you using the live version or the beta? Are you using the Community Editor or any mods?

hmmm that does sound like the saves are corrupted to me. Rather than the folder permissions getting borked.

Thats really bizarre for it to happen twice? Maybe you are running into a bug that does it thats hard to reproduce.

Have you put in a help ticket with support.stateofdecay.com?

thinking about this some more.

is the OS installed to a mechanical drive or a solid state drive?

Have you run chkdsk on it?

Specs?
Hang on.... Are you running win 11?
I remember reading something about last win 11 update stuffed up working with windows apps. May 2022 Windows 11 update KB5013943 may break apps.

According to Microsoft, the issue may be mitigated by running several commands from an elevated command prompt window:

dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:netfx3 /all
dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:WCF-HTTP-Activation
dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:WCF-NonHTTP-Activation

This reactivates the .NET Framework 3.5 and the Windows Communication Foundation on affected systems, and should resolve the issue. Administrators may re-enable them in the Control Panel as well, but most may prefer the commands as they can be executed quickly.
Or roll back the update.

Though thats assuming you did warbucks instructions correctly. Which....

Random stab in the dark here, but if your HD is close to being full try clearing some space. I've seen weird things happen to save files in various different games when the drive starts to get full, especially if I have them on the C drive and its the one close to full. And like someone said, make sure chkdsk with defrag is running occasionally or you're at least running them yourself once in a while. Massive file fragmentation on large drives (especially mechanical) can create problems. Win10 usually manages that on its own unless you've disabled it though.

Backup your saves before they get corrupted.

1,500 hours in game... some of it idling. Never happened to me. But I of course also bought server grade drives, so they will run 24/7/365 for 20 years before they malfunction.

Hey! I think that I have found a solution, albeit it isn't one that gives you your saves back, but after doing this I was able to open the game again. I first turned off cloud saving for this game on steam (I don't know how much this helps, but I don't want to leave anything out of what I did). I then went to %localappdata% and then StateOfDecay2. In the steam folder, I had to click through a few files with just numbers on them, but after that I found the corrupted save file and removed it. After this, my game booted up as usual. I hope this helps.

Not that this helps the issue if you've already lost a file, but I have been using this mod for a long time and it works great for me, and would help prevent future lost game files.
