The only other workaround is to play in co-op and then your friend can drive the other car home.
Also, as a minor warning for the future, the game's follower A.I. doesn't know how to get more than 2 followers into a single car, even if it has 4 or 6 seats. If you somehow end up with 3 followers due to a quest, when you get into a car, the 3rd follower will not get into the car despite the fact that there is an empty seat for him.
You need to drive off and make that follower run the way, but thankfully the combat A.I. for followers and zombies are turned off when they're outside your view distance so you don't have to worry about your follower dying along the way as long as there's nothing between you and him when he finally reenters your view distance.
